22.01.2022 Black Lives Still Matter: The Momentum of Chance Earlier this year people around the country joined together in support of the Black Lives Matter movement to highlight issues of injustice and inequality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait People in Australia. It is important that we keep up the momentum, in order to make long-lasting, impactful change. In this lecture we will explore the historical inequalities faced by Aboriginal people and the continuing struggle for justice ...and equality. We will examine what equity looks like in education and what role we have in in effecting positive change for Aboriginal people and communities for Australia to be truly fair and free for all. Jasmine Craciun is a proud Barkindji, Malyangapa woman who’s grown up in Newcastle. Craciun has always had a love of art and design and she graduated with distinction from a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design at The University of Newcastle, Australia in 2018. Jasmine prides herself on designing for today’s diverse audience and understanding what is needed to communicate with unique groups of people. She believes design should be used to enact change. Perhaps, you could cast your mind back to a time where travelling to foreign countries was a reality and being in unfamiliar places, wasn’t so unfamiliar. It can feel isolating to walk the streets of a place where the langua...ge spoken is not your own. Your brain is unable to decode the words spoken in order for you to know what is being said, you can hear but you do not know. There is a difference between hearing and understanding. A parallel can be drawn here for people who walk on country in Australia. This is not in reference to understanding languages, rather valuing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledges.
