07.01.2022 The work by our researchers as part of the UOW Global Challenges Program 'Building Resilient Communities' continues, with Shawn Burns from the School of the Arts, English and Media working alongside fellow researchers on disability inclusion and capacity building for emergencies. The project will work with people with disabilities in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven to understand how their experiences during the global COVID-19 pandemic and the local 2019-2020 bushfire emergencies can be placed at the heart of community preparedness and recovery, and improve disaster responses.

07.01.2022 Meet our alumni: Sandra Siagian, Journalist and producer, CBS News, New York Whilst Sandra was still at uni, she couldn’t wait to start her journalism career. With internships at The Jakarta Post, Network Ten and The Sydney Morning Herald, she knew that she would chase a career in journalism, and one that would lead her around the world. After working as a journalist for Fairfax for several years, dabbling in print, radio and TV journalism, Sandra took a leap of faith and rel...ocated to Jakarta, Indonesia. At the Jakarta Globe, she worked her way up to Managing Editor of a corporate-lifestyle magazine. It was whilst working in Jakarta that she began covering human rights issues, where she contributed towards the Inter Press Service for the United Nations. She then took a career change as a media consultant for the United Nations Population fund. Sandra then worked for the ABC in Australia and Washington DC where she worked on covering Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the Las Vegas mass shootings. She now works as a producer at CBS News 24 hour digital channel in New York City. Sandra has already helped with the coverage of several major events such as when Robert Mueller’s report into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election dropped earlier in 2019. Sandra has more than a decade of print and broadcast. Sandra completed a Bachelor of Journalism - Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) in 2010. https://twitter.com/sandrasiagian

06.01.2022 More on UOW's Global Challenges Project 'Building Resilient Communities', Cathrine Nielsen-Hewett and Andrew Glover from our faculty, along with a team of UOW peers, are engaging with key stakeholders in the Illawarra and South Coast region to understand the performance of Evacuation Centres during the 2019/20 bushfires. The team will be collecting data in order to provide recommendations for best-practice technologies and solutions and provide a clear path forward for implementation in Evacuation Centres. Once again, such an important project that will see a huge impact well beyond our local communities.
