22.01.2022 WUSA opposes the suspension of and attacks upon Jeremy Corbyn, and opposes the idea that opposition to Israel is antisemitic. WUSA stands with Palestinians against the ongoing occupation and genocide that they are being subjected to. Last week, WUSA passed the following motion in a council meeting. While Corbyn has now been readmitted to the British Labour Party, this will not be the end of attacks upon the left and those who support the rights of Palestinians. As such, WUSA ...sees the question as an important one. Motion: WUSA opposes the suspension of Jeremy Corbyn from the British Labor Party In October, left wing MP and former party leader Jeremy Corbyn was suspended from the British Labour Party. The suspension is the culmination of a long term attempt by the party’s right to reassert control over the party by taking Corbyn down. Corbyn is a long time antiracist campaigner, opposing the Iraq war from its start and speaking at countless rallies against fascism in the UK. The right of the party, who supported the Iraq War and have no antiracist credentials to stand on, accuse Corbyn of not taking antisemitism seriously. This accusation has been wheeled out despite absolutely no evidence of antisemitism on Corbyn’s part. The key basis on which Corbyn is attacked as antisemitic is his support for the human rights of Palestinians. As Jewish Voice for Peace pointed out in a statement in defence of Corbyn in 2018, as Jews, and as the board of one of the leading Jewish organizations in the US, we stand with those many Jews across Britain, the US and the rest of the world, and with our Palestinian allies, who all know that criticism of Israel is not the same as antisemitism. They went on to argue that Attacks like this, whether in the United States or the United Kingdom and regardless of who raises these attacks, dangerously divert attention from real antisemitism. Corbyn’s suspension is a clear manoeuvre aimed at demonising anyone who attempts to take forwards left wing politics in British Labour, and it sets a dangerous precedent for all leftists and people who support the rights of Palestinians. Platform: 1. WUSA recognises that Jeremy Corbyn’s suspension from the British Labour Party is a cynical manoeuvre 2. WUSA sees antisemitism as a serious threat to be dealt with and fought against, and therefore opposes it being used as a plaything or prop in cynical attacks 3. WUSA opposes Jeremy Corbyn’s suspension from the British Labour Party and calls for it to be overturned
21.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE WUSA supports in principle the statement released 16 March 2020 by Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wellings, and commends the decision of the University of Wollongong to prioritise the health and safety of students and staff during this time. However, WUSA has concerns in regard to the practical implementation of both educational and health measures. In response, WUSA President, Alec Hall, has stated There is a shared concern among both staff and students that to d...ate there has been a slow reaction from the University in ensuring that for the remaining days of on-campus subject delivery, classrooms and lecture theatres will be sanitised after each class and that shared work and study spaces will be sanitised throughout the day. No commitment from the University has yet been made to provide staff and students with personal protective equipment, despite this being requested." During this public health emergency, more must be done to ensure that students receive high quality teaching during the period of remote access. There is great potential for lack of equitable access to remote delivery, including for students enrolled at satellite campuses, who have inconsistent NBN and wi-fi availability. For these students, the University must consider waiving fees and ensure that there are sufficient academic consideration provisions for those who require them. If the delivery of subjects via remote access after the census date does not sufficiently meet the subject description or if remote access is not of high quality, the University must ensure that students are able to withdraw from subjects without academic or financial penalty. In response to the uncertainty that staff of University of Wollongong face, WUSA stands in solidarity with the NTEU in calling for the University to commit to providing paid leave for casual staff, in line with those Universities that have already made this commitment. WUSA reflects the concerns of the NTEU in regard to increased work loads for staff because of the remote delivery and opposes any staff cuts during or after the public health emergency. The main concern of WUSA, as outlined by Alec Hall, is "that students should not be made to carry the financial burden that the University faces due to COVID-19, be that through the introduction of austerity measures or a reduced quality of education. Students must not be made to pay for the University's lack of preparedness or willingness to act decisively." Media Contact: Imogen Draisma 0401 009 612

15.01.2022 Thanks to those who came out to protest against the onslaught against higher education. We joined students around the country in demonstrating opposition to the fee hikes of up to 113%, the proposal to cut struggling students off hecs, the attacks on staff rights by UOW and the neglect of international students. We’re angered to hear of the severe repression of the Sydney protest by riot police, and the issuing of around ten fines. Students across Australia will continue to fight against the Liberals’ attacks. Fundraiser for those fined in Sydney: https://www.google.com/url
15.01.2022 Thank you to all those who campaigned. The incompetent Morrison government has continued to fail students across the country - it was an insult to not to provide the same support students with insecure employment and those who have already lost their jobs.
15.01.2022 Next Thursday come to this protest to take a stand against the Morrison government’s cuts to the rate of JobSeeker!
14.01.2022 BREAKING: Federal Education Minister, Dan Tehan, announces that students will lose their access to the HELP/HECS Scheme if they don't perform in their studies & have to pay upfront for degrees! National Union of Students’ Statement: This mornings announcement means that if a student fails to progress sufficiently in their degree, they will lose access to the HECS scheme, having to pay upfront fees to continue to study or leave their degree.... NUS rejects the assertion from Minister Tehan that this package is taking action to protect students and taxpayers. An overwhelming majority of domestic students rely entirely on the HECS system to study. Limited access to study, financial instability, education quality, disability, and the ongoing crisis of mental health in the student body are just some of the impediments to student success. These are issues that are often unreported and receive inadequate support from tertiary institutions or The Government. Students will have the future of their study taken away from them unless they prove to the university or the government, institutions that systematically fail to support young people, that they are struggling. the Job-Ready Graduate Package is promoting a pay for play higher education sector that will put extreme pressure on students to succeed at universities. It is an agenda to incentivize success through fear of punishment, which will only harm the wellbeing and success of our students. Come to the protest on August 28 https://www.facebook.com/events/879116212494339/

05.01.2022 WUSA is pleased to hear that the national jobs framework has been dropped by the NTEU leadership. We understand that future attacks on staff wages and conditions are certain to come, and we’re committed to fighting alongside staff against any cuts they face. Tonight the WUSA council passed the following motion: WUSA opposes all cuts to staff working conditions & pay WUSA:... a) Affirms that staff teaching conditions determine student learning conditions, and therefore reject the idea that staff or students should bear the burden from the loss of revenue in response to COVID-19. b) Notes that the university has announced that it supports staff pay cuts in general but will opt out of the current proposed national framework in order to take a long term approach to savings at UOW. c) Opposes any and all cuts to staff, their pay, or their working conditions that UOW puts forwards either in the present or future. d) Supports the ‘NO’ campaign led by rank and file activist members of the NTEU in rejecting all cuts to staff pay and conditions. e) Calls on the federal government to raise university funding to cover any shortfalls. 04.01.2022 The Liberal Government is on the attack against staff and students! We need to organise and fight back! Join the Online forum this Saturday the 27th at 6PM - Oppose course cuts and fee increases!... - Oppose staff pay cuts and job losses! The Liberal government is trying to raise university fees for Humanities by 113%(!!!) and the fees for Communications, Law and Business by 28%, while slashing government funding to every other area of education. This attack is particularly fierce; privatised education demands students shoulder the burden of crippling debts, when education should be free, fully funded by the government and accessible to all. Previous attempts to deregulate Australian universities by Christopher Pine in the notorious 2014 federal budget were met with a determined and angry student resistance, forcing him to retreat and drop his plans. Now Dan Tehan is attempting to privatise the future of higher education, and the only way to stop it is to organise a fighting student resistance once more. This forum on Saturday 27th June is the first step in forming that fighting body of students https://www.facebook.com/events/672229643358443/
04.01.2022 See you at the meeting on Friday!

01.01.2022 This semester, students have experienced disruption to their education and loss of income, while being disconnected from their regular support networks. Under t...hese new conditions, students need time to reasonably assess their study load - Universities must extend census date now! The NUS are supporting our members across the country in campaigning for this important change - have a look to see how your campus compares.
01.01.2022 Close Christmas island and bring Priya and Nades home. Scummo spent 180 million to re-open the concentration camp but will only commit 20 million for water bombers. Racist priorities. Sack scomo! ... Wollongong Protest for Action on the Bushfire Crisis
