24.01.2022 The latest issue of the Victorian Landcare magazine is out!

24.01.2022 Kim Magnay from Up2Us Landcare Alliance admiring the beautiful Bulbine lily's (Bulbine bulbosa) on the rail trail recently. The Bulbine Lily dies back to a dormant bulb in summer and re-shoots in late autumn, displaying yellow flowers in spring. It can be found in all states except Western Australia. It is considered the sweetest tasting of all edible root plants and is available year-round. A plump, round cream coloured corm is found under the stalk of the Bulbine Lily and i...s eaten after being roasted. Bulbine Lily is also nutritious, being a good source of calcium and iron. Bulbine Lily is found growing wild in tandem with Milkmaids and Chocolate Lilies in the few areas of undisturbed remnant vegetation still existing in Victoria. A great native alternative to daffodils, with the added bonus of fragrance. Great for rockeries, flower gardens and containers.

19.01.2022 Did you know feral deer are considered protected wildlife under Victoria’s Wildlife Act, despite the fact this introduced species is a growing threat to many of the native animals this Act of Parliament is supposed to protect. The Act also protects a number of non-native birds for game that are invasive and have the potential to spread. Paradoxically, several native wildlife species in Victoria are unprotected.... The Victorian Government is now reviewing its Wildlife Act, and if you believe feral deer and non-native birds should no longer be protected now is the time to have your say. You can have your say by making a submission to the Independent Review of Victoria's Wildlife Act at: https://engage.vic.gov.au/independent-review-victorias-wild

16.01.2022 Now is the time for livestock owners to get prepared and have a clear plan to apply in the possibility of a fire emergency on their farm. A key factor in minimi...sing the threat to livestock during a bushfire or on extreme fire danger days is to identify safer areas on-farm where livestock can be moved to. The area you choose will depend on the type of livestock and their expected behaviour during a bushfire. For more info about stock containment areas for emergencies go to https://go.vic.gov.au/Ex53E4 or for help preparing a farm and livestock bushfire plan go to https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/farm-ma/emergency-management or contact us on 136 186. 09.01.2022 In preparation for our farm dam monitoring project, the Up2Us team spent the day acquiring base line data at our dam monitoring sites across the Mansfield district. 02.01.2022 Spark your curiosity this Spring The Echidna and Platypus must be two of my favourite animals. When I start seeing them on the property and in my garden I know Spring has sprung. Spring brings out the curiosity in me, I often get distracted with the small bugs that land on the flowers next to me when I weed or I am often caught pondering what sounds belong to what birds. As part of our reconnecting, the Up2Us team have a few 'Wine and Dine' webinars and potentially a 'real' field day coming your way to continue to spark your own curiosity as we slowly and carefully return form the Covid restrictions. The Up2Us team are aiming to return to the office by the end of October.
