02.01.2022 UPA Sydney Story... Working in aged care I have enjoyed learning and hearing about our Consumers, Veterans and their family history. It’s really important we connect and understand cultural differences and everyone’s unique story as we can all learn and gain something from the people within our community. Whilst talking to one of our Department of Veterans Affairs Home Care Consumers, Susan, I was told of the beautiful display of origami throughout her home. Chatting with S...usan’s daughter, she was able to share her mother’s story with us, and we wanted to on share a snapshot of Susan’s incredible life story with you. Susan was born in 1930 in a small coastal town called Iwakuni on the Japanese island of Honshu. She is the eldest of seven children. It was during the allied occupation of Japan after WW2 when my mother met her future husband, my father Harry. Harry was an Australian Airforce diesel mechanic stationed at the American airbase in Iwakuni. Many Australian and American servicemen married Japanese women and brought them back to their homelands. It was difficult for my mother to learn new customs and to adjust to western cuisine as well as making new friends. My father’s family were very supportive and often came to visit in those early years (1955-1965). My mother worked as a hostess/waitress in the first Japanese restaurant, Sukiyaki House, in the city during the 1960s and 70s. Here she was finally able to engage in cultural exchanges and retain her Japanese heritage by wearing her kimonos and cooking Japanese cuisine. As children we enjoyed the variety of food mum cooked at home and we grew up learning about and appreciating her culture. Many Japanese war brides had settled in the Western Suburbs and soon became close friends as their husbands would often meet for social gatherings. By the 1980s Japanese women had formed larger meeting groups, some were cultural and others religious, throughout the country and we’re able to keep in contact as communication was much easier. Many women including my mother attended these special events and shared their life experiences. Paper folding or origami was a favourite family activity as children, but we did not have the best paper. Recycled Christmas wrapping or magazines were often used to create birds and flowers. Now with internet purchase we can now access quality traditional origami paper to create ornate and colourful objects. My mother and her close friends have passed these skills on to our family. I fondly remember social gatherings full of laughter and chatting as the women taught the art of origami.
