21.01.2022 I bought this pair of ‘tv chairs’ in 2010, (in)conveniently right before my first big overseas trip. . I didn’t quite know why. The varnish had yellowed and stained and although I loved the fabric there was the unmistakeable perished foam smell and years ~ and years of... other smell ? . I always think about them when people ask why upholstery? ~ because it didn’t make sense in 2010 but it does now ... . This captains chair probably became a little dated for eras to follow so was turned into a tub style chair. . Beautiful + structurally perfect foundations + is probably around 100 years old. ... . This knock-off to one of the most iconic modernist sofas was curb side, waiting to be taken to landfill to sit amongst all of our other mass-produced, manufactured sins. . Being such a wasteful shape I decided not to replace the circular foam but add on extra to enhance it. ... . The commercial grade vinyl was carefully measured, cut and sewn to eliminate extra waste. . Whilst there isn’t always a 100% environmentally sustainable option we still have a choice to re-use + re-imagine with the best quality materials for a longer life .
