Glad you asked Smelling the delightful and very distinct sweet smell of the Rabbit Ears orchid (Thelymitra antennifera) one of the beauties we saw this morning, at Landcare members Haze & Matt’s place in Birdwood.... Just love being part of this Landcare group, sharing stories, learning more about nature and hanging with like-minded peeps. 11.01.2022 It’s that time of year when people start noticing that pretty purple colour amongst the paddocks. That pretty purple is more like purple peril as the flow...ers are from the declared weed Salvation Jane- Echium plantagineum. If you do have Salvation Jane- don’t panic!! There is a native biocontrol in the form of insects to assist with control. There are 4 main insects for the control of Salvation Jane: one moth, one beetle and two weevils. The biocontrol agents are all still out there, it's just their levels have dropped in response to the lower amount of Salvation Jane that had been around. Monitor the Salvation Jane as the insects may already be there and just need some time to build up again. Being spring time, you may even see the adult Crown Boring Weevil, Root Boring Weevil and the Pollen beetle. Salvation Jane does not like competition so work towards stopping seed set and establishing competitive pastures or revegetation. For advice on understanding the damage biocontrol insects cause to Salvation Jane and to assess if insects are nearby head to https://bit.ly/2GMU7oX https://bit.ly/3iHMKfW or contact the Hills and Fleurieu Landscape Board on 8391 7500. 06.01.2022 The real monetary saving in Regenerative Agricultural systems comes from inputs you haven’t had to buy. This oat crop grown by Colin Seis at Winona required lit...tle to no inputs & had a net positive effect to both his farm ecosystem and his farm bottom line. Why? Because Colin has restored his native perennial grasses, which has lead to the regeneration of his farm & soil ecosystem. Once the farm ecosystem is regenerated, and no-till Methods are maintained, we have a fighting chance to get off the Farm-a-ceuticals To learn more about No-till methods and this type of farming visit www.smartsoiledu.com/online-courses

01.01.2022 Got Salvation Jane on your property? Here’s how to look for the biological control agents that can keep this pervasive weed at bay. Landscape Officers Jess ...Cavallo and David Hughes demonstrate a quick and easy way to look for the friendly root and crown weevils in your paddock. All you need is a shovel and piece of white cardboard or old corflute sign. And if you don’t find any, we’d love to hear from you! While we can’t release the agents this year due to low numbers, we hope to work out the priority areas for biological control in the next few years. Please get in touch with the Northern and Yorke Landscape Board on 8841 3400. And don’t forget there are other ways to keep on top of Salvation Jane: Outcompete weeds by growing healthy pastures and local, indigenous plants Avoid overgrazing areas as Salvation Jane thrives on bare ground . . .
