20.01.2022 Now is a great time of the year for trying to spot the Australian water-rat/rakali in the wild. The start of colder conditions possibly causes this attractive ...aquatic mammal to switch to becoming more active during the day instead of at night. In addition, the influx of independent juveniles from the summer breeding seasons into the population may cause a spike in numbers in the early autumn. If you do see Australias "otter", please remember to report the details of the sighting to the APC at www.platypus.asn.au or email the details to [email protected]. See more

19.01.2022 Upper Shoalhaven is excited to share with you the second video in a 3 part series of workshops on designing, installing and monitoring nest boxes for local wildlife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63JpkEzpAWk Would you like to have a closer relationship with some of our native wildlife? Are you a budding or even experienced carpenter whod like to try your hand at helping out our local wildlife?... Over 300 of Australias native species are dependent on tree hollows, but with the recent devastating forest fires, many large hollow-bearing trees have been destroyed. Our aim is to give our wildlife a hand by making and installing custom made homes to replace the ones theyve lost. This video was made possible by funding from Landcare Australia Bushfire Recovery Grant 2020. Landcare Australia, Landcare NSW, NestBoxTales

17.01.2022 Quick Fish Survey - 10 questions 10 minutes https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/STNRJTX Macquarie Perch is an iconic Australian fish that is the favourite fish of many a fish enthusiast. It has been listed as Endangered for quite some time, populations are now at critically low levels across Victoria, NSW and ACT and under wide ranging threats. Local Land Services is leading a team of local people, practitioners and researchers to help recover these populations.... Itd be a great help if you were able to undertake a quick online baseline community knowledge survey to give us an idea of community knowledge of the Macquarie Perch, its habitat needs and its threats. Online survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/STNRJTX If you prefer a paper version, or have any further interest in the fish and the project - please get in touch with [email protected] or Rebecca Klomp at Upper Shoalhaven Landcare on [email protected]. You can find the survey here or follow the link on the Upper Shoalhaven Landcare facebook page. Thanks good people

12.01.2022 Browning Spec Ops Edge (2020 model) video examples - just because a few people are asking! This is the new 2020 version of the Browning Spec Ops Advantage - a (...true) no glow cam, that was absolutely top of its class - for the mid-priced cams for 2019. The Advantage sold out everywhere before the new 2020 model came out (sob - I checked...). Couple of grizzly reviews on Trailcampro - um, not what Ive seen?! Re sound (poor / me: no diff to Advantage = good), and grainy night imagery (perhaps it was foggy? / me: just fine, better than Advantage). Just two grizzles - only 3 reviews tho, theyve barely had the cams long enough to figure out its min focus distance, field of view, most sensitive detection regions, optimum weather for recording and compliant wildlife subjects. Cam was released just a month ago I think? Every model is slightly different, even if just the next years version. I find it takes me a bit of experimenting to get the best out of each camera, then Im set! Im calling the two grizzles, operator error or poor recording conditions. The main difference I can see, is snappier and smaller critter detection for the Edge compared to the Advantage. Yay! Sugar gliders, small birds, this matters. But triggers a little more for small movements like grass and leaves - its a compromise as always. The other difference that I can see without squinting, is better night imagery. Just a bit, the Advantage wasnt too shabby in this regards. Daytime imagery - Ill have to squint for this difference. The Advantage was top of its (mid-priced) class anyhow. Still waiting for my good lighting, colourful bird comparison videos. Theyre busy elsewhere eating native grass seeds, like whod want to check out nest boxes now?! Sorry still working on daytime close ups. Its been windy, and terrible lighting, and the birds have dispersed with the moisture in the landscape and plentiful food. Not much interest in the nest boxes atm either with winter setting in. Ill not share example videos in such poor lighting that would look terrible using even the most expensive camera gear out there! Ive also been recording side-by side comparisons with the Browning Spec Ops Advantage (2019 version), and will share once I get my good daytime videos.

12.01.2022 Spotted Pardalotes are a tree hollow using species (if desperate), but prefer to nest in termite mounds, river banks, and apparently mounds of soil! I wondered... who was making a small little hole - started 6 weeks ago. In my large mound of native plant soil - purchased for revegetation work over autumn/winter on my property. Now I know! This Pardalote has rather expensive tastes... Well, I guess Ill not be using this soil anytime soon! A Spotted Pardalote family trumps the use of this soil elsewhere for several months. Its clearly not at all interested in the Pardalote nest boxes I have installed. I might have to add a permanent mound of dig-able soil out in native bush part of my property! The middle of the driveway is perhaps a bit too busy as a permanent nesting spot. I did try to entice it to use a nest box - hole to the right. Ive buried a small nest box in the soil, and added a small black tube stock pot as the entrance tunnel. Pardalote has shown absolutely no interest. Here on a ridge top in Wamboin, there is a thin layer of concrete-like hard packed clay soil, and lots of outcropping shale rock. Not exactly suitable for small birds to burrow into to make nests! This ones a smart little Pardalote Spotted Pardalotes are one of my favourite bird species (shhh but dont tell the others!)

09.01.2022 The coronavirus crisis has changed many aspects of the world as we know it. But as primary producers, land managers, ecologists and others well know, life on the land continues. The need for strict physical distancing and restrictions on travel meant we were unable to proceed with our planned autumn field day series. Sustainable Farms are now pleased to announce a series of digital events drawing on the research of the Sustainable Farms team, to help support continued learnin...g and connection even during these physically distant times. The first webinar, Biodiversity recovery after bushfire, will look at the implications of the recent bushfire season for biodiversity, lessons from long-term fire studies conducted by the ANU, and what landholders can do to support recovery. Professor David Lindenmayer, from the ANUs Fenner School of Environment and Society, and Sustainable Farms ecologist Dr Mason Crane will focus on how these insights apply to agricultural landscapes in North East Victoria, the NSW South West Slopes and Tablelands. The webinar is free but registration essential click here to register via Eventbrite. https://mailchi.mp//biodiversity-recovery-after-bushfire-o
