06.01.2022 Cr James Burns, chair of the Scone Revitalisation Committee. "I love renovation shows. I sit down and watch Shayna Blaze and her merry men around her talk about the feel of a new coat of paint and then watch the real estate agent walk in and sell the house that has been on the market for the past decade, in a month, because of said coat of paint. Numbers increase dramatically and the vendor is almost always impressed beyond words. The host speaks as triumphantly as he can in ...his English country accent and the credits role. We are currently working on the Scone CBD Revitalisation project and are building momentum on the project. Our engineers are working away at solving our drainage issues and the like. Our Landscape designers are eager to get out into community consultation and show their wares and for me; well this is another project that I want to see to fruition and so am wishing time away to get to the day when we finally put shovel into dirt and commence this gargantuan task. But a bit like Shayna in her endeavour to spruce up every room she walks into (and I think she does that with her smile) she simply can’t do everything she want because budget restricts her. Now that I have mentioned the budget there are those who will have an issue with money being spent on projects they don’t like or agree with, there are those who think that the money should not be spent on the street and then there are those who feel we shouldn’t be spending any money at all on anything, we are in a recession you know! Simple fact is we have $11 million dollars at the point for what we believe will be a $20 million project and while we continue to advocate for further funding from our Cousins in Macquarie St and Canberra, we are practical about that and our looming deadlines. So with this in mind and no TV cameras in sight we are taking a staged approach. At this point two stages are in train. The second stage only has the roundabouts in Kingdon and Susan St in it. This was done to secure certainty for Transport for NSW to get their plans in place to resurface our street. It also has the added benefit of placing those costly items in a later stage so as we can get them at a later time. Rome was not built in a day as they say and neither was Kelly St so the refurbishment of the street should be taken with as much care, concern and vigilance as any other great landmark. So whilst not as simplistic as a coat of paint in an inner city apartment foyer, the sentiment is the same. We will do what we can with what we have and make it work to our advantage with a view to continuous improvement."
