23.01.2022 Need a little retail therapy? Melbourne and shopping have been hand in glove since the 1880s, and at its peak, the city flaunted more than a dozen department... stores. In the lead-up to the holiday shopping season, we take you back to the golden era of Melbourne retail to hear about the rise and fall of department store empires such as Foy and Gibson, Manton's, and George's. Discover more about Melbourne's shopping culture through our collection here: slv.vic.gov.au/stories/from-the-vault-department-stores

15.01.2022 Recently, Richard Rawson of the the Victorian Forests Commission Retired Personnel Association has been plotting, within a GIS, tramway routes and mill sites co...ntained within a 40km by 50km area, east of Melbourne. He has used (with permission) information plotted on LRRSA maps to put this together. Amazingly, the area, in total, supported a minimum of 1134 kms of tramway and featured 392 sawmill sites. Laid end to end the tramway distance would get you from Melbourne to Adelaide or Sydney and a good part of the distance back from either!. Incredible!!! See more
