25.01.2022 Find it harder to move in winter? In Tokyo where it really gets cold researchers looked at what type of activity people did depending on the weather...and guess what, when the weather is cold and calm people liked to shop and eat, data showed people staying longer in eateries, in fact using mobile phone collected data, which meant a sample group of 31 855 people, this group of researchers (Horanont et al, 2013) established that when it rains or is very cold there is a great v...ariation in what activities people choose to do right down to the detail that if wind speed is greater than 4km/hr people engage in very different activities. Make sense..cold wind makes us do different stuff! I though when it is cold you rug up and curl up on the couch but these guys have referred to research suggesting that weather can influence social interaction, travel, even crime rates, public health and stock prices! 22.01.2022 Fall asleep on the lounge again? Strange sleeping positions can trigger acute neck pain. During sleep the body seeks to unload and neutralise the days postural forces. Sleeping too heavily(I.e. not moving during sleep) or sleeping in an awkward position can cause neck pain on waking. Physio can help untie acute episodes of neck pain immediately. Call Upright Physio today if you fell asleep on the lounge last night.
20.01.2022 How is your balance? Some therapists believe that balancing one one leg may be one of the most important exercises to rehab a knee or an ankle (Seung Nim Nam et al, 2016, Jogi et al, 2015, Culvenor et al, 2016). Find a therapist who knows how to do it well. 19.01.2022 And another beautiful sunset.
17.01.2022 Ready to spring into Spring? It is well known that before leaping into exercise, especially after the inactivity of Winter, a good stretch will help prevent injury and post exercise pain (Ryan et al, 2018). One thing I didn't know was that a study this year (Berutta et al, Scientific Reports volume 8, Article number: 7864 (2018) ) suggested that stretching can also reduce cancer growth...however the study used a mouse population...but nevertheless something to think about. 17.01.2022 LIKE TO WEAR TIGHT CLOTHES? Physical Therapist Yoo (2016) has scientifically measured the effect of tight clothing on movement, and guess what, if you're wearing very tight jeans, highly likely that your pelvic tilt angles will be altered. Yoo also states that further studies are needed to investigate the relationship of tight clothing to 'musculoskeletal disorders' or pain in layman's terms. Most of us have first hand evidence of pain after wearing tight jeans...seems logical, but what happens if you are forced to wear a very tight pink top with frills and you can't take it off yourself? I would suspect some onset of belly pain...at least? But at least she looks good ?!
17.01.2022 Another beautiful dawn at Peregian Beach.

13.01.2022 CAN I STILL SEE THE PHYSIO? Well, how are you feeling? Stressed, in pain? Physiotherapy, massage, craniosacral therapy and exercise therapy are well documented to help. Upright Physio remains open during this time as allowed and supported by the Australian Physiotherapy Board who stated on 2nd April 2020, "Community physiotherapists can contribute to minimising the impact of COVID-19 by keeping individuals healthy in the community and out of hospital. "... Photo credit Noloneliness.
13.01.2022 When was the last time you walked up a hill. Well worth the view and well worth the exercise.
11.01.2022 The clinical rehabilitation publication Sage Journal cites an article that demonstrates stretching twice a day can significantly reduce neck and shoulder pain, simple and far cheaper than repeated physiotherapy consults! However physiotherapy helps too!
11.01.2022 ARE YOU WELL? Another SUNLIT morning at the beach. I am staying well. Wisdom can be gleaned from our ancestors in medicine and may be of some guidance. Training as a physiotherapist I was required to do internships at hospitals in regional Australia. There was one particular hospital I remember fondly because of its veranda. Originally architectured in1888, and rebuilt in 1949, it remained relatively unchanged since. I took up internship there in 1993.The wisdom of the medi...cine in that day meant that the hospital had been built with large glass opening doors, from the ward rooms to veranda. The patients were wheeled in their beds or on what looked like reclining deck chairs out on to the adjoining veranda for at least 30 minutes a day. This practice was to some degree still in place when I appeared in 1993. It felt like I was on holiday (well almost), treating patients at a resort. Open wounds, drips, plaster casts and other medical interventions along with a country view and the sun. The mood was decidedly upbeat. A stark contrast to the long grey corridors of the mighty inner city hospitals with thousands of beds in air conditioned environs. The sun, with its proven germicidal and antibacterial properties, not to mention its mental health benefits, was the medicine. But the question that arises today, is it antiviral? Well, Dr Richard Hobjay, researcher and international writer has made a connection between the sun and health during the Influenza pandemic of 1918 in the United States. Here influenza patients recovered better and had less losses, and lower staff infections in 'open-air' hospitals. And further, outbreaks were more severe in crowded, poorly ventilated conditions, particularly in military settings. The message seems clear (without getting into a discussion on the health effects of love and war here). Putting it simply, stand in the sun (or run or walk or skip or dance), the evidence is rolling in, starting long ago. The country hospital where I trained has now been modernised; there is no access to, or indeed any veranda at all. The sun has made its exit as a modality from hospital medicine. Upright Physiotherapy offers open air treatments, please go to https://www.uprightphysio.com/special-services for information. But please note group sessions are no longer taking place. 02.01.2022 ARE YOU WELL? Another SUNLIT morning at the beach. I am staying well. This morning my son did not say good morning to me, instead he said," I read the other day that "keeping sick people in isolation is quarantine. Keeping healthy people in isolation is tyranny, ' ". He then quietly went back to his PC.I haven't seen him since. Keeping the youth away from social gatherings, public places and retail outlets is hard, but it gets easier so long as they are on their devices. But...Continue reading
