16.01.2022 WE FISH FOR SUSTENANCE: NYIKINA FISHING EXPERT TALKS ABOUT CULTURAL PRACTICE Neville Poelina is a Nyikina man from the Kimberley and a regular fishing enthus...iast on Ngaarda breakfast. He runs a successful indigenous tourism business called Uptuyu Aboriginal Adventures and true to its name .. it is up to you!. You get to choose your own Kimberley adventure. Mr Poelina boasts of a 5 and 8-minute fishing spot and believes that Traditional Owners should have their own laws under the current recreation fishing rules. "I just wanted clear it up for the people that are not traditional owners, I think there are three types of fishermen out there, there is the commercial fisherman, he is there to make money, recreational fisherman, he is there to just catch them and release, then there is us lot, the traditional owners and they are sustenance fisherman. "And sometimes the fishery laws look like they are uneven, I just wanted to make other people aware that in our culture on the coast when someone passes away we can only eat fish and in those situations we have to go down and fish for our community not for our house, sometimes the laws look a bit unfair. Mr Poelina says that in his culture when someone passes, they feed their community and the Nyikina can only eat fish. "We take as many as we can but we dont exploit it, thats why we still have a fishing stock today, its a thing that a lot of people dont understand and is a part of our culture." Its the same reason as the sun comes up, its because! I cant really explain it, its a cultural thing since the sunrise, since our first sunrise thats been a law." In 2002, Neville Poelina wrote a fishing strategy for the Kimberley and the Pilbara for the fisheries department. He travelled the Pilbara and Kimberley asking questions. " I found out later those questions had been asked since 1909 which is quite frustrating, you ask the same questions you get the same answers. sadly at that time, the Minister, he could have done a better job but he didnt alert the wider community about our cultural obligations." "We would never have a fishing line, we have traditional remedies along the coast and river that allows only to use at such times to anaesthetise the fish in the water and take what we require and then we stay there until the fish right themselves and swim away. There is a big thing going into using that and that was my biggest fear when the fisheries said that "ohh you get to use your traditional ways" I said wow, thats pretty dangerous, there are people that are not abiding by their cultural obligations and laws, it could be quite detrimental to everyone. Sadly there is too much ego and people just want to get on facebook (for the likes).
