20.01.2022 Thank you. Yesterday, on-site learning re-commenced for the third time this year for the majority of Victorian students, just in time for term four and the end of the school year. It’s fair to say that 2020 has taken a toll, with emotions running high and energy levels depleted for many. For senior students, particularly during term three, the challenge of ‘remote learning fatigue’ has been a very real one, as has the loss of normal, everyday, peer-to-peer social interaction.... Yet full credit to them, they've dug deep and got on with it, making the best of their situation. Throughout this last term, I've been very moved by the number of #alumni who have come forward from both Upwey High School and Rowville Secondary College to offer students their time and energies to take part in Ourschool live Q&A sessions. They have shared career advice, humour, moral support and lifted flagging spirits during an unsettling time for everyone, (alum included). To say ‘thank you’ feels inadequate - I am so very grateful to you all. You are testament to the importance and value of an alumni program to enrich students' futures and benefit the whole school community. #givingback #alumni #community #lockdownlearning #support #alumnipride Ourschool
19.01.2022 Our earlier ‘Throwback Thursday’ post took us back to the class of 2010 and yesterday, Year 10 students were privileged to hear from an alumna from that very class! Sarah Varmalis, Upwey High School alumna, very generously gave her time to share her experiences and career pathway to becoming an osteopath since leaving UHS ten years ago. It all began when Sarah, (then 13), accompanied her mother to an osteopathy appointment, and was intrigued how the practitioner could trace h...er mother’s leg injury pain based on a simple assessment. Inspired, she investigated #Osteopathy as a career pathway, becoming fascinated with the various treatment modalities that could be applied. Yesterday Sarah spoke to students about her happy memories of school, and her slightly tricky pathway to studying Health Science at Victoria University, Melbourne Australia, (due to shattering her fibula and missing a large part of year 12!), but persevering nonetheless, and going on to achieve a Masters of Osteopathy in 2018. She also talked about her time in London after being selected for a month-long placement exchange program with the University College of Osteopathy, where she was able to treat clients full-time, learn from various lecturers, and hone her skills to becoming an osteopath. Sarah now works locally as a Doctor of Osteopathy in Boronia treating a variety of patients both young and old, from sportsmen and women to typical desk-workers and she absolutely loves it! For students to hear from/put questions to such an engaging and informed individual was a genuine privilege. They were able to gain a real insight into the day to day aspects of being an osteopath, the study involved, the many different types of cases and injuries and the absolute pleasure Sarah gets from helping people feel better. Thank you, so much Sarah, for helping inform and inspire current students and being part of a wonderfully proactive and committed UHS alumni community, helping benefit the whole school community! #upweyhighschoolalumni #osteopathy #givingback Ourschool
17.01.2022 *Special thanks to Upwey HS alumna Erith Nash, Radiation Therapy Intern at Peter Mac who spoke brilliantly about her career pathway on Friday* Industry Insights Session 1 Employers and economists often talk about jobs of the future and growth industries. But it’s hard for high school students to know about these jobs. So Ourschool is bringing the workplace to all of our partner schools in a series of online Industry Insights sessions featuring particular industry sectors.... We’ve just hosted our first live stream Q&A and it focused on diverse careers in health and allied health. We were delighted to do this with alumni from our partner schools and other guest speakers who work at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, one of the world’s leading cancer research, education and treatment centres. The session was aimed at Year 10s, and we were astounded by the number of students from our 18 partner schools, including some in Year 11 and 12, who viewed the session and asked some incredibly thoughtful questions. The Peter Mac speakers talked about the realities and the fulfillment of their jobs. Rarely if ever, do students get to hear about the pathway from school to uni to work directly from those on the frontline of our health services. #upweyhighschool #petermac #industryinsights #careerpathway #alumniisupport #health

15.01.2022 Ruling the airwaves... Kate Stevenson, Upwey High School alumni class of '96, has had a love affair with talk radio since her teens. Driven by that passion, she is now one of Melbourne’s best-known radio producers, rising at 3am to produce 3AW Breakfast, Melbourne’s No.1 breakfast show, Monday to Friday for the past seven years plus appearing on-air with presenters Ross & John. Excelling at English at school, Kate studied Comms & Journalism at Monash University before volunte...ering at St Mary’s Hospital Radio, London, for a year while completing a course in radio documentary. Frustrated when her UK visa ran out, Kate promised herself a career in radio, enrolling in a commercial radio course at Swinburne University upon returning to Melbourne. During a two-week placement with SEN Sports radio, she toured the 3AW studios and the rest, as they say, is history. Kate generously took part in a live Ourschool Q&A session, with over 280 English, Media & VET Music Industry Year 10, 11 & 12’s sharing fascinating stories about her career, broadcast skills and answering students’ questions such as, ‘Who is the most famous person you’ve interviewed?!’ Thank you for your energy, advice and inspiration Kate, you are the perfect example of why it's so important for students to follow their passion! #UHS #alumnipride #upweyhighschoolalumni #3AW #upweyhighschool #givingback

12.01.2022 The benefits of an alumni network... As Year 12s enter their final weeks of schooling, their attention starts to shift towards the next, new and exciting phase of their lives. For some this is tertiary study, for others it is paid employment, but for many, the future is uncertain. It is both an exciting and unsettling period, added to an already challenging year. At times like these, young people often receive invaluable support from their parents, peers, and teachers. For st...udents who attended Ourschool partner schools, they also have the added advantage of joining their schools' #alumni program network, and reaching out to well-connected, successful, and supportive former students for help and advice with #career-networking and #employment. Last week, Wren Archer Gillett Upwey High School alumna from the class of 2019, generously shared her LinkedIn profile with Year 12 students, explaining the importance of having one, the purpose of the different sections of her profile, and discussing the fantastic networking opportunities the platform has created for her. Students were then encouraged to create their own profile and connect with alumni in their school Alumni LinkedIn Group. Thank you Wren, for sharing your invaluable LinkedIn knowledge with current students with such enthusiasm and smiles! #givingback #support James Merlino #alumni #LinkedIn #connections
