19.01.2022 OUR RESEARCHERS ARE IN THE NEWS AGAIN! Personalising antibiotic treatment is the way to go for doctors to dose correctly and kill bad bugs!! Our researchers Prof Jason Roberts and Dr Hafiz Abdul-Aziz collaborated with 11 countries to develop Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) guidelines. TDM is a system whereby dosing is personalised for every patient according to their disease state and the way their body interacts with the antibiotic. Everyone is different! Our results showed that TDM leads to better responses from critically ill patients to the antibiotics used, which is extremely important since over 13% of critically ill patients die each year from infections.

19.01.2022 ANOTHER PhD SUBMISSION!! Congratulations to our Martha Druery who just pressed the submit button to submit her PhD thesis! All that hard work and stress is now sheer relief! Well done Martha Druery. We know you will pass with flying colours! Marthas PhD addressed the psychosocial outcomes after major burn injury in adults.

19.01.2022 It was 15 years ago when Prof Jeffrey Lipman set out to form a research centre that would focus on life-saving treatments for burns patients and critically-ill patients. The Burns Trauma & Critical Care Research Centre (BTCCRC) was established in direct response to the Bali bombings. The devastation and tragedy of this event focused national and international attention on burns victims and emphasized that there was a critical need to improve the early and on-going treatment a...nd outcomes of burns and critically ill patients. Many of the victims were flown to Royal Brisbane & Womens Hospital (RBWH). The outstanding response from the critical care, burns, anaesthetics and emergency medicine teams of the RBWH back in 2002 highlighted the skill and expertise we possess in this area and the need to maintain this expertise. Thus, the BTCCRC was established in 2004, beginning with 3 staff members and no Higher Degree Research (HDR) students to 60 staff members and 30 HDR students in 2019. We are now one of the most prolific research centres in this area of critical care! Happy 15th Anniversary BTCCRC!

01.01.2022 NATIONAL ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE FORUM Our forum is a great success! Doctors, researchers and scientists from around the world and Australia have converged on the RBWH campus to discuss the important dilemma of antimicrobial resistance. We were very privileged to have Prof Sara Cosgrove from the USA as our keynote speaker. Our BTCCRC was well represented at this forum. Well done to Prof Jason Roberts and Nermin Karamujic for bringing this all together!! Remember do not use antibiotics when you dont need to!

01.01.2022 WELCOME Cristina Sanches We warmly welcome Prof Cristina Sanches, a research pharmacist from the Federal University of Sao Joo del-Rei in Brazil. Prof Sanches will be trained in the design of drug dosing studies and modeling of anti-infectives using specialised software so she can set up similar studies at her university. A one dose fits all approach does not work in critically ill patients and so working out the best dosing is crucial to getting patients better sooner and in severe cases saving patients lives from life threatening infections. We wish you and your family a very fruitful and happy stay in Brisbane, Cristina.

01.01.2022 #AMR2019 Forum Podcast Our very own Dr Suzie Parker is giving a podcast this afternoon on her research into preventing antimicrobial resistance in babies and children. Watch this space for the link!
