We have some ideas that will roll out over the next few weeks so make a comment, or send an email, with your own ideas for us all to do. Let’s all get Social in Iso!

11.01.2022 If you're into palaeonathropology and human evolution, ARCHE, PERAHU, and GCSCR over at Griffith University are hosting a Zoom seminar with Dr Zarin Machanda on December 3rd at 11am. Have a read of the abstract, below, and register at the link if you're keen! "What can chimpanzees tell us about human aging? Humans are living longer lives than ever before and so it is critical to understand the process of aging. It has become increasingly recognized that successful aging is no...t just about physical health but also about our social lives. Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives and also lead long and complicated social lives. But unlike humans, chimpanzees are not subject to complex cultural and cohort effects that can impact aging. In this talk, Dr Zarin Machanda will discuss the recent efforts of the Kibale Chimpanzee project to study aging in a population of wild chimpanzees. Using over three decades of data, this team has shown that chimpanzees and humans share a number of aspects of the aging phenotype including how individuals change their social behaviour and friendships with age. Importantly, this research shows that long-term data from chimpanzees can be extraordinarily valuable to understand healthy aging and to promoting well-being in humans across the lifespan." See more

10.01.2022 WHAT AN HONOUR(S)! In the first instalment of our new Wednesday student research showcase, we have 2019 UQ Honours graduate Elise Matheson: Hi everyone, I’m Elise. I completed my honours at UQ at the beginning of 2020. My honours thesis investigated the archaeobotanical assemblages from the Ivane Valley sites in highland Papua New Guinea.... I have been at UQ since 2015, and have been volunteering in the archaeobotany labs ever since. In this time, I have worked on material from all over the world. This experience ultimately allowed me to identify my passion, studying hunter-gather subsistence practices using archaeobotany. My honours thesis allowed me to explore this interest by investigating carbonised plant remains recovered from sporadically visited hunter-gatherer campsites in highland PNG, dating from the Late Pleistocene to the mid-Holocene. I was able to identify clear spatial differences in plant use, seen between occupation sites and a possible transition in Pandanus use in the mid-Holocene. As well as the use of several previously unknown plant macrofossils. I have been on digs in Myanmar, Turkey, and Australia. I have presented my research at a conference in Perth, and will also be presenting at AAA this year in the Thursday the 10th of December during the 2 pm session (A Continent in Isolation: Plants and Animals in Australasian Archaeology Part 2). I’m extremely passionate about archaeobotany and hope to begin a Masters in Ethnobotany at the University of Kent in September of 2021 (fingers crossed).
