04.01.2022 The Convict Chase entries are now open on Rowing Manager @rowingqueensland for all eights ( School, Masters and Open) wanting to race’n’chase down the mighty Brisbane River on November 28th. All competitors will be sentenced to 7.4km of hard labour, starting near the Stockwell’s house on Wanganui Reach and finishing at Rowing Queensland HQ on Milton Reach. Cracking the whip from 7am. The Convict Chase is a cheeky nod to the 3 lost convicts who were the first Europeans to d...iscover the Brisbane river in 1823. The 3 men originally set sail from Sydney on a timber-gathering expedition to Illawarra when a wild storm rolled in and blew them well off course. They were cast adrift for 25 days and eventually landed in Moreton Bay. Once back on land the three castaways were determined to walk back to Sydney but hopelessly headed in the wrong direction. They walked naked, shoeless and tired along the Coast until they sighted the mouth of a river where they trekked upstream until they were able to cross over at Oxley Creek in a stolen canoe. Fortunately they were taken in by the local Turrbal people and provided with food, water, shelter and directions until heading back to the coast. Here they met Lieutenant John Oxley and reluctantly helped to guide him back to the river in search of an ideal location for settlement. Oxley then named the river after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane. 197 years later and there are plans for more blood, sweat and tears on our mighty Brisbane River. Who will get punished, and who will do the punishing?? Just don’t break the rules... Get 7 of your mates together ( plus one slightly smaller one) and transport yourself to Rowing Manager and get your entry in!! Race the Convict Chase 2020.
