20.01.2022 Another one of our very own execs is this weeks feature for our Start-Up spotlight, Check out what Ankit Ghosh is doing with his start-up Fero . Fero aims to make everything about renting vehicles far easier and much more unique experience. Ankit is also partnered with a previously existing rental startup, which is going to relaunch soon. Check out what he has to say! . How are you involved in the start-up community? ... My initial experience with regards to diving into the world of startups was a disaster. Then I got inclined towards this ecosystem again after a colleague of mine at my workplace berated me for months to give things another try and then among other things I also started getting placed at startups by virtue of the UQ Ventures programmes which gave me insightful experiences; currently keen to consolidate Fero and relaunch another rental startup. . How did these experiences help you in your start-up journey? Such experiences made me embrace the sensation of uncertainty, which is one of very few constants while working on startups. . Biggest Challenges you faced? Biggest challenge was to eradicate this habit I had of over estimating the capabilities of individuals I could possibly rely on while in a startup environment , in the case with startups a blinded sense of optimism is a curse . Even though not applicable in all instances , serious red flags must be considered. . What is your advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? My advice would be this , go ahead and do what you want to; failure will teach you well. Have a pair of invisible horse blinkers ready at all times, learn to appropriately blind yourself when needed. . Watch this space for when Fero relaunches and and make sure to check them out!
20.01.2022 Our start-up spotlight this week is none other than our winners of the UQ Ventures x UQIES Hackathon, Skill+! Team members Aaron, Anastasia, Dion, Martin and Tom reflect on their time in the programme and what they got out of it, check it out below What is Skill+? In a competitive job market, its important to gain experience and skills outside of your formal education. Unfortunately, without that experience, how do you know what skills you need to focus on? It can also... be difficult to understand what career pathways are available to you based on the skills you already have. Skill+ aims to give you the personalised analytics you need to answer those questions. Aaron What problem are you trying to solve? The problem we are trying to solve is employability. We are witnessing a global health crisis with COVID-19 and it is having serious economic impacts. Some sources go as far as to say that in Melbourne, 25% of the population will be unemployed. So as unemployment rises we need to be able to upskill and seek out new jobs. This is why we developed the idea for Skill+ which is an automated career advisory software. Martin . What inspired you to get involved in the Virtual Hackathon I have previously been involved in the Weekend of Startups and the IdeaHub Unlimited Series, which were both great ways to introduce myself to entrepreneurship. This Hackathon was where I could pull all my experiences together and Im so happy with how it culminated. I learnt about focusing on niches, and developing a thorough and feasible business plan the revenue streams of a company always seemed trivial to me but now I understand how important it is to get this right. Tom . What inspired you to get involved in the Virtual Hackathon/ how did you get involved? I love doing hackathons because they give you a chance to try something different and experiment with fun new ideas. Tom brought this particular one to my attention and I was especially excited because it involved a bunch of close friends and wed never had the chance to work together before. It also helped that there was a financial incentive and it fit nicely into our uni break. Dion . Advice from your experience to up and coming entrepreneurs? When creating your start up idea, dont get too attached to an idea to the point where you cant listen to and learn from feedback. If want to join a UQ Ventures program but are worried you wont get in, then my advice is just apply. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain! Anastasia . Cant wait to see what these guys bring in the future!

16.01.2022 To end our week and get us moving into the weekend, this weeks start-up spotlight is Andrew Walker from @getsparkbikes . Now a UQ Alumnus, Andrew was active in the UQ entrepreneurship scene. He also is a former president of UQIES! Read on to see what he has been getting up to post UQ . Tell us briefly about your current role As a City Launch Manager Im responsible for all of Spark Bikes Brisbane operations. My role includes managing fleet, enabling growth, maintainin...g and developing relationships with partners, and managing day to day store operations. . How did UQIES inspire you to pursue a career in the startup scene? Through events and meetups, UQIES helped me connect with some awesome people. I loved hearing so many amazing stories of what founders have learnt along the way and then being able to learn from them. . Whats the biggest challenge youve come across working in startups? It can feel lonely sometimes, especially if youre working by yourself. I consider myself to be an extrovert so its especially tough to be working on your own. . How can students learn more/get involved with spark bikes? Spark Bikes provides a great opportunity to allow students the ability to ride smarter and earn more while riding on food delivery platforms. Learn more at www.sparkbikes.com.au .
16.01.2022 Weve got a very exciting start-up Spotlight this week, Milton Rum Distillery Milton rum is a newer Brisbane distillery. Post Covid Restrictions easing they, along with their rum bar @themalecon, are charging full steam ahead. With lots of exciting stuff coming soon, be sure to check them out! However check out below how Head Distiller Alex Bell got his start at UQ, How did your experiences with Ideahub (now UQ Ventures) help you enter the start-up scene? ... Through joining Ideahub in 2015 and doing its programmes, I was able to meet Nimrod who became a great mentor. He wasnt much of a rum drinker at the time, but he believed in the idea, and I was able to be introduced to a lot of people through him and the programme. I found one of the biggest things I gained from my time with Ideahub was at least learning where to look. Actually knowing what you dont know is one of the biggest things you can take out of programmes like that Tell us about Milton rum distillery Milton Rum started when I met one of my Business Partners. Basically what I wanted to do was start-up a distillery and a bar, and I had no idea about hospitality what-so-ever. Through networking I found the now current business partners, Azza and Harry, Its been a long process but god its been Fun. What sets us apart is our innovative streak, very few distilleries are operating with newer technologies and with an idea of wanting to push boundries and thats something we do on a regular basis. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced? People. Learning about people. When you leave uni you get all of the numbers. You get all of the theoretical knowledge about how things should be done but a lot of the time the theory only takes you about 30% of the way, to get the other 70% of the way you really have to get experience. The start-up journey has been fun, but its definitely a learning curve. What is your advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? Never give in. And have fun. Do something that you want to do. Dont do something for the money, because thats the wrong way to go about it. Its not a get rich quick scheme, its a 20-30 year endeavour, that if you sell out early thats awesome, but if its something you want to do, this will be your life. Make sure to check them out at Instagram: @miltonrumdistillery Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/miltonrumdistillery/ Website: https://miltonrumdistillery.com

14.01.2022 Our girl Riannah is queen when it comes to navigating the startup scene . Her current venture is Rosewell, a sexual wellness company. How did UQIES help you launch? The UQIES tour of London, where we met founders with incredible stories of lean startup really pushed me to just start, and figure out the rest later.... Tell us more about the problem youre solving. The diversity of sexual experience is not well represented. In fact, 40% of females will encounter a sexual problem in their lifetime but less than 20% will seek further care. Rosewell is making sexual wellness accessible for everybody. Favourite thing about startups? Its incredible how many people are willing to help and support. It does take a village. You can follow Riannahs progress on Instagram at @Byrosewell #UQIESStartupSpotlight

11.01.2022 This weeks #UQIESStartupSpotlight is Raun whos started his very own sustainable design house and fashion label, GreenSanity . Rauns been a familiar face around UQIES for a while having been club secretary in 2019 and has participated in several of our entrepreneurship programs, but this year hes set his sights on startup success . Tell us about GreenSanity ... Our main aim is to generate awareness about conscious consumerism, ethical fashion and sustainable fabrics such as Hemp, Nettle and Organic Cotton. Biggest challenge? Time. Finding time was definitely one of the biggest challenges for everyone in our startup. With everyone either working or studying full time, it was always hard to find time for the business. Another challenge faced by our team is thriving on limited resources. What do you love about the startup ecosystem? Startups, although tough and time consuming, are seen as a platform of enormous growth for both the business and the people running it. If executed correctly, startups can be hugely lucrative and take businesses to new heights. Moreover, one gets to experience unique opportunities and develop skill-sets in many functional areas of a business that cant be taught otherwise. Word of advice for upcoming entrepreneurs? If you have an idea that you think will work, try it out! You never know when an idea can turn out to be a game-changer. There will always be obstacles, but if you are determined and are with the right people, they can be and will be overcome. You can find out more about GreenSanity https://www.greensanity.com.au

10.01.2022 Back to Uni means bringing back our Start-Up Spotlight Series , Check out our first for Semester 2! UQIES alumni Ashley Baxter is top of the class when it comes to startup success . Since graduating in 2018, shes launched Monty Compost Co, a smart monitoring device that tracks and analyses your compost . We caught up with Ash to pick her brains on what it takes to get from ideation to a fully functioning biz .... Here are her top 3 recommendations for growing your startup . 1. Always be learning. Growing your startup means growing every part of it, whether its the team, the product development, the market or any one of the million other things there are. While you wont be doing every little thing yourself, you need to be on top of it all, which means constantly learning new skills. 2. Always be selling. You could have the best product-market fit out there but if people dont know about it, theres no way youll be growing your sales. Whether its sharing on your socials or chatting with the neighbours, you should always be making marketing a priority. 3. Always be planning. The life of a startup is long and youll never be able to predict exactly whats going to happen but to grow it successfully you need to plan for what might happen. Its never fun to think about the worst case scenario happening but if it does happen, being prepared means being able to overcome it. Thanks Ash! Were so proud to have been a part in your startup journey You can learn more at www.heymonty.com/.

07.01.2022 This weeks #UQIESStartupSpotlight is Josie who started a rental marketplace called Shimmy. Josie has been involved with UQIES and UQ Ventures, heading on the Tel Aviv adventure a couple years ago. She has now taken what she has learnt to begin her own start-up journey! Tell us briefly about your startup ... Shimmy is a rental marketplace that lets you lend or rent almost anything. You can earn money by lending out your dust gathering goods, from old musical equipment, drones to surfboards. While renting almost anything you need off the site, we even have a confetti cannon on Shimmy. There is no limit to what people have lying around, Shimmy can help offset the costs of ownership while helping the environment. How did UQIES inspire you to pursue a career in the startup scene UQIES gave me the opportunity to work with a tech startup amidst a rebranding in Tel Aviv. The whole experience inspired me to start my own business. Since then, UQIES has been so supportive, offering vital mentorship every step of the way. Biggest challenge you came across working in startups Tech is always a huge challenge, especially when you are in the bootstrapping phase. We are always looking for talented developers and designers. Sometimes recruiting feels like another job on top of Shimmy. What do you love about the startup ecosystem? I love how the startup ecosystem is unique in that it values what you learn from your failures, probably more than your success, because the learning curve really is so steep. Words of advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? Dont be afraid to fail, focus on what you can learn from it and adapt. Also, believe in yourself, thats the most important thing. We are also recruiting tech and marketing roles now if anyone would like to get in touch send their CV to [email protected] Follow Shimmys progress at @justshimmyit on instagram and Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/justshimmyit

04.01.2022 Meet this weeks #UQIESStartupSpotlight, AirShare a flight experience marketplace . This crew make scenic flights accessible and affordable through ridesharing . Biggest challenge? Finding something to make that would be genuinely useful. We spent almost a year twiddling our thumbs trying to create a whizz-bang platform for a cool idea that nobody wanted.... What do you love about the startup ecosystem? The abundance of opportunity floating around the startup ecosystem is pretty exciting. If you get out there you can crowbar your way into some spicy projects with impressive people. Theres also a heap of support out there - whether it be accelerators, startup weekends, co-working spaces etc. Words of advice to upcoming entrepreneurs Focus on finding problems - not conjuring ideas. Business is about solving problems and only that. Before building abc or learning xyz, look for critical problems and learn the skills you need to service them. Its efficient and you can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time when youre not wasting time on fluff. Absolute sky high legends! Thanks for your sharing your journey and words of wisdom

04.01.2022 This week our start-up spotlight is another amazing UQ Alumnae, Samira da Tollo with Elbaite! Elbaite is Australias safest cryptocurrency exchange. Meeting the demands of Australian traders who seek security, safety, and control of their assets. It was cofounded by Samira and her older brother Mortaza Tollo. Together they have successfully completed two rounds of capital investment. Hear more about what Samira has to say about her journey below Biggest challenge you came... across working in startups? Creating a startup that is involved in two highly regulated industries like the fintech and cryptocurrency industry meant that on day one there were massive roadblocks to overcome. Navigating through AUSTRAC registration, creating AML/CTF policies and creating solid relationships with Australian banks were overcome with the help and guidance of mentors and our executive board members. How has covid-19 affected your start-up journey? Elbaite is based in Melbourne, so the whole team is experiencing stage 4 lockdown. Start-ups are mostly associated with networking events, co working spaces. But with this pandemic all those normalcies had to be stopped. Now its all back from working from the garage (home); forcibly replicating the beginning journeys of famous entrepreneurs. Specifically, for us, we have converted all our normal activities to online. Which includes pitching for our next funding round online, and all networking events are zoom events. It has also highlighted the importance of having an online presence, which has been our focus during this lockdown. Amidst this lockdown we have continued to grow our business and even onboarded our newest business partners with the introduction of the gold backed cryptocurrency, AUS token. What do you love about the startup ecosystem? Its more than just a job, its a lifestyle. A startup experience is hard to replicate when compared to other work environments. There are fewer barriers for your work to have effect. This is both exciting and daunting. Words of advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? The start-up journey is a long one, so make sure you learn to enjoy all the challenges and the opportunities that come with it.
