25.01.2022 While some of us will welcome the gradual easing of restrictions over the next few months, several others may find it difficult to go back to normal after a long period of social isolation. Due to the fact that many of us haven't experienced something like this type of isolation in the past, it can be difficult to know how we might deal with it. You may start to have feelings of social anxiety or fear of germs even if it's not something you have experienced before. Please... know that you are not alone in this, and given the circumstances, it is completely normal to have these thoughts and feelings. The absolute best thing to do is seek help, especially when your daily life is being affected. Make an appointment with your GP they may be able to refer you onto a psychologist that can help you with strategies to reduce anxiety over the coming months. Check out the info below from Queensland Doctors' Health Programme on how to find a GP. Other things that may help ease anxiety include gradually working your way up to seeing friends/family and being in public places again. Mindfulness & meditation, daily physical activity, good sleep hygiene, and reaching out to loved ones (even over Zoom) can also help with feelings of stress and anxiety. Learn more about mental health during the easing of restrictions in this article on The Conversation: https://theconversation.com/coronavirus-lockdown-made-many- GET A GP - DHASQ 'Docs-4-Students' The QDHP have recruited GPs with a special interest and additional training in the realm of medical student mental health who have kindly offered their time to support YOU. 23.01.2022 "Internship can be scary, daunting and overwhelming at times. It can also be exciting, rewarding and a step forward in your learning. Take the highs and lows as they come learn to celebrate your successes and learn to grow from your downfalls. Do not burden yourself or suppress any angst/sadness/stress you have reach out to friends and family, take mental health days to destress/offload your worries, and dont ever be afraid to seek professional help if needed. And rememb...er to check in with your colleagues too. Good luck on your brand new exciting adventure we cant wait to welcome you to the hospital! PS feel free to reach out to me if you ever have any questions about internship, the hospital system, or just to have a general chat. " Emma Chan is a UQ Alumni, domestic applicant for QLD, and an intern at Logan Hospital, currently on her Emergency Medicine rotation. Read her full profile and others at: http://uqmind.org/doctor-to-doctor ___________________________________________________________ Internship is a different beast entirely, and, like with med school, each of us finds different strategies to survive. Our new campaign Doctor-to-Doctor presents ongoing reports from the field, from deep in the heart of postgraduate employment. Each focuses on a newly-graduated doctor, from their application to the Internship Campaign to the challenges and rewards of finally working in the real world (including receiving their first medical pay check)! This is the pure unfiltered perspective, and we're here to showcase it all. At the same time, we are hoping to encourage a conversation. Feel free to reach out and discuss any thoughts, concerns and questions. If would like to get involved in writing a piece yourself, please contact the project manager Bryn Bélanger on Facebook or send us a message. We look forward to hearing from you soon! In the meantime, enjoy the upcoming editions.

11.01.2022 California, Louisiana, Massachusetts, what do these three states have in common? Pretty much nothing, besides that I lived in each for at least six years. Moving caused me to reset friends, routines, and myself. Coming to Australia was no different. Working as an analyst with a background in finance I thought I had something to prove in medical school, so I afflicted self-pressure to be eternally on: to be optimistic, to elicit laughter, and to represent my former institu...Continue reading

10.01.2022 What brings you happiness? Its a simple question. If asked this question several years ago, my answer would have reflected my belief that happiness was derived from external things. The more people I endeavoured to connect with, the more goals I set out to achieve, just the more stuff I surrounded myself with, the happier I would be. So I strived for more, to be more. However, the more that occupied my life, the less aligned I was to my true self. In todays world it is very... easy to get caught up by the many distractions competing for your energy. This ultimately creates dissonance between your expectations of what should make you happy and how you truly feel. A number of challenges and events over the last year have completely shifted my perspective on happiness. One being my Observership in Pokhara, Nepal - my first placement in a foreign country. I was nervous, but I instantly fell in love with the beautiful nature and appreciation of the Nepalese culture. One afternoon we visited children in an orphanage, several of whom had muscular dystrophy. Never in my life had I seen such true joy. As we played ball, sung songs and chatted to the children, their eyes were glowing and smiles were brimming. I remember walking back to our house that afternoon amazed by the sheer gratitude of those children; children who had so little, yet appreciated so much. It helped me realise that happiness isnt a direct product of what we have in life, but instead what we choose to be grateful for. What brings you happiness? When asked this now, my answer shows just how far my outlook on life has come. Now I am my happiest when I actually stop and remove myself from my bustling environment. I am my happiest when I take the time out to be grateful for the small, yet not insignificant things in my life. Ive come to realise that when you strip everything away, your happiness is able to shine the most. - Keely Lynch ___________________________________________________________________ Minds of Medicine (MoM) is a photography project aiming to provide insights into life and medical school, one story at a time. The portraits and captions capture the struggles, successes and daily lives of our peers. If you would like to get involved, please send a Facebook message to the UQMind page! 08.01.2022 QAMSA X AMSA MENTAL HEALTH Humans of Medicine No Time for Sadness... It took her only a second to assess me, and find me wanting. Fake, she sneered at me, on the very day that Donald Trump won the US Presidency in 2016. I cannot describe to you the agony of being harassed out of a public restroom, or of being screamed at on the street by strangers I walk past. I have no words to describe the terror that just going outside can bring, wondering if someone might again take exception to my very existence. And, as I have discovered over the years, there is no pill strong enough to relieve the hopelessness that crushes down every time someone misgenders me. Still though, I’m a medical student, and this is no time for sadness. There are minimum attendance requirements I need to meet; patient histories to take, cannulas to place, operations to observe, and in the hustle of the day I come a distant second. The toll exerts itself later, when I’m home alone and the quiet night closes in, when I cry and cry but still can’t get to sleep. Sometimes, I imagine, my friends wonder, when I don’t turn up for class the next day. Sometimes still, when times are really tough, they find me curled up in a corner at uni, rocking back and forth and trying to summon the courage to go see another patient. No one deserves to be made to feel this way. And yet, overwhelmingly, trans people do. Recent studies show that trans people over 18 are 11 times more likely to attempt suicide compared to the general population, a figure so unimaginably high I can think of no apt descriptor to apply to it. We live in a society that ruthlessly oppresses its most vulnerable. When faced with a problem of this magnitude, raising awareness, although a good place to start, is simply not enough. Nothing less than widespread, systematic change can end this mental health epidemic amongst the trans population. For us as medical students, the task starts within our own institutions. By loudly advocating for an increasingly trans inclusive curriculum in our medical schools, and by taking a stand wherever and whenever we see transphobia play out, whether in class or on placement on the wards, we can ensure that each future generation of doctors to graduate will be the most informed yet. We must not cease in our advocacy until the health outcomes of trans patients match those of others, and I cannot say how long or difficult the road may be. Still though, we are strong, and we must begin. Hailey Bonner

08.01.2022 Happy #WellnessWednesday from UQMind! With the disruption that COVID has caused to our studies and goals this year, it's normal to have feelings of hopelessness. You may have had plans to fly across the country/world to do an elective that really interests you. You may have had goals to ace your exams this year, but have lost motivation during time in quarantine. You may be in your first year of medicine, looking to make new friends, but are having difficulty due to the soc...ial distancing requirements that came on early in your studies. You may have lost your job due to COVID and are having difficulty supporting yourself. Finally, you may want to travel interstate/overseas to reconnect with family and friends, but can't see that happening in the near future. Let's be honest, 2020 was not what any of us were expecting or hoping for. It's difficult to see a plan for the future and find meaning when these things are continually being disrupted. And that can make you feel hopeless. There are a few strategies you can use to try to ease these feelings. First would be to re-adjust your goals so that they fit within the current environment. Perhaps they need to be microgoals as opposed to long-term goals due to the constant state of change we are in. Ask yourself what you could do today or this week whilst still following restrictions that aligns with your values. Additionally, it's important to share in hope. If you have hope for another person, like a loved one, and they achieve their hopes or dreams, you can experience positive emotions when this happens for them. So let's share more with each other and mind our mates. <3 There are also resources that you can access to discuss feelings of hopelessness and the difficulties you've had this year. Our go-to suggestion is the Medical Student Support Team (MSST)! You can book an appointment with them by emailing [email protected]. To learn more about how you can find some hope in the current environment, read this article: https://theconversation.com/feeling-hopeless-there-are-thin Always remember, mind your mates, mind your wellbeing, and mind you mental health.

07.01.2022 A powerful message from the UQMS Indigenous Officer Ella Ceolin. We at UQMind acknowledge the trauma of recent events, racism everywhere and their impact on members of our community. We strongly encourage members of our community to participate in tomorrow's informal lecture on racial injustices in medicine by Dr Bryan Mukandi. Sign up for the lecture here: https://communicate.health.uq.edu.au/em/forms/subscribe.php... We understand the events of the last week have been confronting for many of the members of our cohort. Remember it is completely normal to feel strong emotions in this difficult time, and your emotions are all valid. If anyone is feeling like they need support at this time, please do not hesitate to contact the QLD Doctors Health Programme 24/7 Helpline at 07 3833 4352, or reach out to the Medical Student Support Services Team at the following link: https://medicine-program.uq.edu.au/medical-student-support Now more than ever, remember: mind your mates, mind your wellbeing, mind your mental health

06.01.2022 Today marks the final day of Mens Health Week 2020 - a week meant to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. "Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (thats five men a day, on average)...Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they dont care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with... men effectively." https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/ This is why it is important to talk about mens mental health. If you have a friend who doesnt seem like himself or may be exhibiting signs of mental illness, let them know youre there for them, that you want to help, and that there are resources available. Our go-to recommendations are the med student support team at [email protected] or the UQ crisis support line at 1300 851 998. Check out the features below that Beyond Blue have been sharing this week of men who are finding ways to cope with their circumstances brought about by COVID-19.

03.01.2022 Today marks the final day of Men's Health Week 2020 - a week meant to heighten awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys. "Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average)...Meanwhile, men are less frequent visitors to general practitioners, and the perception is that they don't care about health or that health services are not well-prepared to interact with... men effectively." https://www.menshealthweek.org.au/ This is why it is important to talk about men's mental health. If you have a friend who doesn't seem like himself or may be exhibiting signs of mental illness, let them know you're there for them, that you want to help, and that there are resources available. Our go-to recommendations are the med student support team at [email protected] or the UQ crisis support line at 1300 851 998. Check out the features below that Beyond Blue have been sharing this week of men who are finding ways to cope with their circumstances brought about by COVID-19.

02.01.2022 Happy #WellnessWednesday from UQMind! Today is without doubt one of the most stressful days of the year for many of the members of our cohort- as you receive your end of semester results, it is normal to feel a number of different emotions and to react differently to your friends and those around you. It is important today regardless of your results to remember that you are always worth more than a grade, and any emotions or feelings you are experiencing in response to your r...esults are valid and legitimate. The last semester has been difficult in ways that no one could have expected, and everyone responded differently in reaction to the demands of studying medicine during the COVID-19 pandemic. In light of this, remember to be kind to yourself- the last six months have undoubtedly been some of the hardest of your university career, and simply coping with the added complexity of the current global crisis is commendable. If you are feeling upset or angry in response to results, remember to take time out for your mental health: call a family member or friend, go for a run, make a favourite meal. Finally, if you are feeling overwhelmed, the following resources are always available to all UQ medical students: Queensland Doctors' Health Programme 24/7 HELPLINE on 07 3833 4352 UQ CRISIS and counselling line: 1300 851 998 Med Student Support Team: https://medicine-program.uq.edu.au/medical-student-support Mind your mates, mind your wellbeing, mind your mental health
