04.01.2022 Congratulations Tony Birch and Melissa Lucashenko, both shortlisted for the 2020 Barbara Jefferis Award for 'The White Girl' and 'Too Much Lip' The Barbara Jefferis Award, administered by Australian Society of Authors, celebrates women in literature and is awarded biennially for the best novel written by an Australian author that depicts women and girls in a positive way or otherwise empowers the status of women and girls in society. The judges' comments, 'We were v...ery much struck by the empathy with which the experiences of older women were depicted as powerful role models for those younger than them ... women who were survivors of both personal and family challenges and cataclysmic social, econimic and environmental events... The narrative voices created were of immense power. We were challenged by judging two years of publication, where any one year in Australian publishing yields such treasures. But after much deliberation we settled on five outstanding works to shortlist.' Winners will be announced 4pm, Wednesday 18 November. https://www.asauthors.org/services/barbara-jefferis-award
