10.01.2022 Bula Vinaka and welcome to another #FeatureFriday! This month, we recognise the achievements of UQSPIA Alumni Caroline Robertson. Graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Dual Major in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering) she has gone on to achieve great success with her degree. Representing the Melanesian island of Fiji Caroline is an outstanding role model for aspiring and future engineers. Im grateful and humbled to have been involved with various constructio...n projects ranging from subdivisions, road construction and rehabilitation in the western corridor of South East Queensland, to being seconded to Manila, Philippines for 6 months for the berth expansion of an international container terminal and now being involved on a construction project in regional Queensland. Carol was inspired by her father to choose Civil Engineering; a career choice that was not obvious for herself. She knew that she wanted to pursue something that could positively contribute towards society as well as challenge the norms associated within a male dominated industry. Throughout her tertiary journey, she managed to balance both work and studies. Working night shift for 3 years cutting vegetables and fruits while studying definitely humbled me the most. At first, I was super embarrassed about working night shifts cutting veggies (but) now Im like it supported me throughout uni. Being a university student, comes with its struggles. Carols confidence was affected when she failed a subject but was grateful to have had the best support group around her who were instrumental in inspiring her to never give up! Failing a subject or two at uni is not the end of the world, be resilient, refocus and attack it once more because the road less travelled by, will make all the difference. Thank you, Carol for your contribution to UQSPIA. We are proud of the amazing things that you have achieved! She leaves us all with a scripture from Hebrews 11:1 For faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of the things not seen.
