25.01.2022 Welcome to this week's Corona Craft brought to you by the SACWA State Handicraft Committee. We hope you are all safe and well, and ready for something different.... This craft was sent to me from Ila, a long time member of the SACWA Semaphore Branch. We all need reusable bags, so if you are a basic sewer, this craft is for you! Carry/shopping Bag (sizes shown for Sample) 1. Can be made any size cut two rectangles 2. Bottom corners to be cut out. Sew double (straight machine stitch and Overlock) for sides and bottom (leave top open). Press seams. Bring cut out corner seams together across corner, double stitch for strength now you have constructed the side Gusset repeat with other corner press. 3. Overlock around top of bag and press 3cms to inside of bag and attach pressed Handles to long open edges with two rows of Machine stitching (top and Bottom) around whole top edge of bag You could add a pocket (for phone or car keys) on outside or inside 4. Handles: cut two pieces as shown, for each piece, sew long edges together, inside facing out and leaving some long sewing threads hanging threads can be tied to a bodkin or safety pin to be threaded back down inside your handle to assist you to turn right side out! 5. Press right side - neaten strap end to inside tube or overlock across topstitch all round edges to keep flat. Remember the SACWA Handicraft Shop is now open: Mon, Wed & Fri 11am till 3pm, with Covid-19 restrictions enforced. Phone and email orders are welcome. @ Adelaide, South Australia

21.01.2022 Kadina Memorial School Community Poppy Project: as we near Remembrance Day an enthusiastic team has begun organising a stunning display of knitted and crocheted... poppies. Our target is to have panels of poppies on the schools front fence as well as wrapped around trees in the heart of the school. This will require hundreds of poppies, if not a few thousand, and we continue to welcome all community contributions to achieve our memorial to the districts former armed services personnel. Weve been heartened by the poppies made by students and their families and those donated by community members making this an authentic community project to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in war. If you would like to contribute a knitted poppy pattern is available on the schools website: https://www.kms.sa.edu.au/poppy-projector/

14.01.2022 Throwback Thursday: Today we focus on Mary Walker House. MWH is the administrative and handicrafts hub of the SACWA. The property at 30 Dequetteville Terrace ...was purchased in 1951 and became The Club. Built alongside, MWH was opened by Sir Thomas Playford on August 9th, 1963. The building was named after Mary Walker who retired as Honorary State Secretary after 16 years. The most memorable exhibition ever staged in MWH was during the Festival of Arts in March 1966. Our Patron at the time, Lady Bastyan attended the Exhibition which ran for 17 days. Mary Walker House, at any time of the day and often into the night is a hive of activity. The Handicraft Shop is always busy be that with customers, handicraft meetings or handicraft schools. Our front reception area always has a lovely display of home produced goods be it jams, chutneys or hand knitted blankets and throws or our popular cook books, tea towels, Laucke scone mix and more.
