22.01.2022 Our 'Homeleigh Neighbourhood Garden' (run by Rick, Ben and Catharine) is getting bigger and better all the time..... Beautiful fresh organically grown beetroots have been picked and preserved this week. Two types of beetroots were used to make Pickled Beetroot (sliced and cubed) and a rather delicious Caramelised Onion and Beetroot Relish. PS: We love sharing our homemade produce with our guests!!! :)
21.01.2022 We've just had a really weird storm event (in fact two) the last couple of hours. Out of nowhere two short sharp storms, with lots of lightening, a good dose of rain, but thankfully no apparent damage. Check out these stunning photos from Homeleigh and Kyogle (Thank you Noelene, Adam, Emily Kathy and Kerry for the stunning pics)! Julie
18.01.2022 Stunning photos from the lovely James Bennett during his last visit. This is just a taster of some more of his photos still to come..... Aren't these just lovely!
17.01.2022 Many thanks to Green Getaways Australia for the lovely write up :) #greengetaways We would love to have you come and stay with us, but if you are in another state or too far away, do yourself a favor and check out some of the stunning accommodation options available on the Green Getaways Australia page!
16.01.2022 After taking in the sunset across the distant Border Ranges, guests can relax and chill out on warm nights in their own private vertical garden room at 'Uralba'.
16.01.2022 The Koala Chronicles at Uralba continue with *(WARNING)*, a little bit of Koala porn! A couple of days ago, we thought we were watching a mum trying to kick her baby ‘out of the nest’ so to speak, but instead it was a mature boy and girl hanging out and flirting for a number of hours, before the ‘main event’! Possibly (hopefully) a new baby Koala joey will be born in 35 days. It would then be another six months before the young one comes out of the pouch. It will s...pend another 6-12 months riding on the mum’s back before going off on its own. It’s all pretty special and many of our guests have been lucky enough to check out the Uralba 'koala crew' during their stayl There's narration in the photos if interested......and showing the last couple of mums and babies here at the end of the sequence. ENJOY #Uralbaecocottages #koala #koalas #Visitkyogle #Ecotourism #Ecotourismaustralia #Greengetwaways
14.01.2022 Can anyone help us to identify this sweet little frog please? Only 30-40 mm long in full song near our front door, on the orchid....as the sun was setting this afternoon :)
14.01.2022 As we now start to welcome back visitors from Qld again finally, this lovely green frog has come out to say "Welcome" (isn't she/he so pretty! :)
13.01.2022 Everything in nature is connected....this is very cool :)
13.01.2022 We absolutely LOVE the new art work we have in Kookaburra cottage from ART ARK - Ethical Aboriginal Art!! These vibrant beautiful pieces come from the gifted @Antonia Napangangardi Michaels who first began painting with the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. Thank you Antonia, we hope you get this message!
13.01.2022 Important message.....if you can, please do.... As Christmas approaches, large overseas factories are making monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- mercha...ndise that has been produced at the expense of Australian labour. How about a gym membership, a house clean, facial or massage for mum? Perhaps a night at a local play or ballet or a hair treatment? Dad may like his car detailed or a service from down the road? Rather than a new flat-screen what about a lawn mow, trees trimmed or games at the local golf course. How about a half dozen lunches in January at the local sandwich shop from a locally owned business not a chain. This is about supporting Australians to keep their doors open. Visit the local market where crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewellery, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes. Leave the mailman, delivery man, your courier driver or the dog or house sitter a nice BIG tip. Australian small businesses need your support. If you care about your local community the benefits come back in ways you can’t imagine. Please repost this and spread the word.
12.01.2022 50 m from Kookaburra Cottage watching the sunset overlooking the stunning World Heritage Border Ranges. Relax and unwind...... :)
12.01.2022 You would be hard pressed to find a more adorable sight? During a serious phone call ‘working from home’ today, this adorable mum and baby popped into my view less than 50m from the cottages! The mum was trying to find a good sleeping position, before they both settled down for a full afternoon nap (they were still asleep in the same position tonight) We normally see babies just on their mum's back, only sometimes on the front being cuddled like this, but this shows how the baby moved around as mum was travelling to a better spot. We also saw another big boy Koala at the top of our road last week - last photo. We really hope this brightens up YOUR day in some small way x
11.01.2022 It's been another exciting 'koala day' at Uralba! :) Our guests this morning woke to see a lovely boy koala within 50 m from the guest verandah having a snooze and a stretch. He looks sooo relaxed! A short time later, the mum and bub were also close by in an adjoining tree. Please enjoy this koala 'spam' (if of interest) and ponder this..... 1. How do koalas cool when it is so hot and they have such thick fluffy fur? (it was really hot and humid here today) and 2. Imagine being a mum koala when you just want to rest (high in the tree tops) when your bub just doesn't want to sleep? Do any human mums relate to how difficult this must be?
10.01.2022 We have done the very best we can do in preparation to ensure our accommodation at Kookaburra Cottage is as ;Covid-safe' as we can make it. We are looking forward to welcoming guests from Queensland again very soon :)
10.01.2022 Did you know? Tawny Frogmouths extend their body to look like a broken off tree branch trying to blend in. They shut their eyes when trying to ‘hide’ but have evolved to see through slits in their eyelids during camouflage! They feed on nocturnal insects, worms, slugs and snails. The majority of their food is acquired by SITTING STILL AND WAITING FOR INSECTS TO FLY INTO THEIR OPEN MOUTH......Imagine that! Insects are attracted to the inside of their beak which is yellow. ... Their feathers insulate them well, both from heat and cold. They stay in position on perches, even on hot days, producing mucus in their mouth, breathing through the mucus to cool the air. Tawny Frogmouths can be heard making a bass ‘ooom’ (meditation-type) sound. Pretty cool eh! #tawnyfrogmouths #uralbaecocottages #ecotourismaustralia #greengetawaysaustralia See more
08.01.2022 Australia’s history dates back to the beginning of time across thousands of generations. Don’t you think it’s amazing that the different Nations of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Straits people have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet! Our First Nation’s peoples have occupied and cared for the continent for over 65,000 years. They were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diploma...ts, first astronomers and first artists. They invented unique technologies and built and engineered structures predating the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. The theme of this year’s NAIDOC 2020 this week is Always Was, Always Will Be. All Australians should be PROUD to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of our First Nations people. At Uralba Eco Cottages, we are proud to recognise and acknowledge the Gullibul people of the Bundjalung nation as the traditional custodians of the land, and we pay our respects to them and their cultures, and elders past, present and future. A ‘Welcome to Country’ is a custom welcoming visitors to help them relax and be the best self that they can be. Uncle Andrew (our friend and neighbour Andrew Johnston), an elder of the Gullibul people, explains more about the smoking ceremony and the spiritual and cultural connection to the land and it's connection to people. Thanks to a lush forest for sharing the video. #Alwayswasalwayswillbe
06.01.2022 Check out Ricky who’s in his brand new (whiter than white) full bee suit! What a cutie . He LOVES me taking photos of him (NOT!!!!), but he had to test out the gear and check whether the bees had survived and thrived after their recent relocation to a new more spacious permanent bee hive. We are very new to this bee keeping caper!!! We ultimately hope to be able to add to our homemade jam/pickle collection for our guests to include organic home grade honey. All good so far :)
05.01.2022 Everyone everywhere is unsettled during this difficult time, but it is especially tough in Victoria just at the moment.... :( Here's a post of some of our pretty birds at 'Uralba' to (hopefully) give you a smile? The beauty of nature seems unaffected by Covid at least? Please stay strong and be safe everyone! :) xxxxx
03.01.2022 Do not be fooled by the stunning beauty of this gorgeous little killing machine.....!! We love our insects, but the ever-so-efficient Rainbow Bee-eaters regularly visit in small gangs, hanging out high in the tree tops swooping on our unsuspecting bees and other insects mid-flight. They then take their prey (bees and wasps in particular) up high to whack them on the branch, removing their stings and venom before digesting them whole!! Nature is amazing and our guests can regularly observe the ‘circle of life’ in real life here at ‘Uralba’ PS: These Bee-eaters are SO difficult to capture with our limited photography skills - it’s taken weeks to get one or two vaguely clear shots (eg they are super fast and only land far away, often in shade)
03.01.2022 We are not religious, but what is that saying? There but for the grace of God go I? How can anyone ‘judge’ anyone who is trying to do the right thing caug...ht up in the current Covid nightmare just look at the rest of the world people!!! There are way too many judgmental sanctimonious individuals spouting nasty ill informed comments - don't speak too soon and why not TRY to be kind and empathetic instead of unpleasant....? WE are sending our most positive energy and loving thoughts to EVERYONE in Victoria Please stay strong and be ok. Look after yourselves and each other as best as you can. Sending Lots of LOVE xxxxx especially Ashlee Ayla Nerijus Jim Joy
