22.01.2022 With the warmer weather just around the corner we need to be aware that snakes will be on the move. I have printed this out and put this in my doggie first aid kit in my car so the information is at my fingertips. Thankyou Family Vet Centre for this information.

22.01.2022 During the Muscles & More and Urban Canines Foundation Puppy Classes we talk a lot about the benefits of positively working with your puppies to create a happy ...dog whilst doing nail trims! We teach several ways of shaping positive nail trimming practices during the classes and here young full of spunk Miss 'Valerie' and her owner Senior Vet Nurse Phoebe from the Family Vet Centre show us all how much fun it is to learn how to use a scratchboard from Muscles & More! Valerie also showed us how clever she is a sit, although sitting on the scratchboard could be a right chaffing experience if not careful! #FPC2

07.01.2022 Puppies first environmental challenges! Making directional choices So very proud of our 3rd Foundation Puppy Class participants at last weeks class! 06.01.2022 Last week's class for our puppies & handlers was all about Paw & Claws. Janine from Muscles & More showed the class how puppies can trim their own nails using a scratch board whilst thinking its a game with yummy rewards. Why Nail Trimming is so Important?... Proper posture is one of the important reasons for keeping your dogs nails trimmed! The joints of your dog are affected by long nails by making the dog shift its body weight backwards. The dogs back and hind legs then take more stress than it is designed to. Sensory input through feeling and gripping surfaces via the pads on your dogs paws make nail trimming even more important. When the nails are too long the dog cannot feel through their pads correctly. Most dogs are unable to naturally wear down their nails even when walked on hard surfaces regularly. Regular nail trimming roughly every 2 to 3 weeks is necessary to keep your dogs nails, paws and structure in the best possible health. When nails become overgrown a dogs paws may also splay (spread) out. This is where the toes spread apart making walking and balance extremely uncomfortable and difficult. Dewclaws must also be trimmed and kept short so as not to get caught or grow too long where the nail curls back into your dog’s pad and create infections. Proper nail length is even more important in elderly dogs where joint injury, tripping or snagging their long nails can create injuries that can be detrimental to them. If you have an elderly dog that is having joint or seems stiff and sore, overgrown nails can be a contributing factor.
