Regularly we are called to quote and repair pine joists, bearers, posts and balustrading, we always recommend to build and repair with hardwood. This is why...... For the price difference in painting pine balustrade and staining hardwood balustrade, hardwood comes out cheaper every time unless you want to paint over the beauty of exposed hardwood. For external hardwood uses, such as joists and bearers, used in a deck, if installed correctly you will never see rotting from the life span of a hardwood deck. If you where to use pine (although cheaper) you will experience rotting both wet and dry within a few years (and termites love that soft stuff). Do yourself a favour and alway ask for a quote on hardwood for any external use, not the cheapest option get the best option!
