23.01.2022 It was great to get some beekeeping done over the Easter weekend. Remember that right now you should be doing autumn disease checks on all your hives. And most importantly April is #sugarshake month. It’s super important that we check for the exotic mite Varroa as it’s not here right now. 22.01.2022 Swarming is a natural part of a bee colonies seasonal behaviour. Left to their own devices a colony may swarm once, twice or more sometimes every year. The characteristic ball is simply a resting place for the swarm whilst scout bees fly reconnaissance missions looking for a suitable cavity in which to begin anew. Once found they will do a complex dance to communicate about the cavity they have found. Many scouts will dance about many places. Once a decision is made the ball ...dissolves and they fly to their new home. . As beekeepers we need to try and manage this swarming behaviour, sometimes we are successful and sometimes we are not. . 19.01.2022 These images show what beekeepers call collectively brood. This refers to all the egg, larval and pupal stages of bee development. In the first image you can see young larvae curled in the bottom of their cells in a puddle of worker jelly. This is the first food they eat. As they grow they start to fill the cell in a tight c shape. They should look glossy and white like in the second image. Finally the larvae begin to turn and stand up in the cell. If you look closely at im...age three you will see several larva that are starting to rotate upwards. Once they are completely upright, worker bees cap the cell with a mixture of beeswax and bee hair making the lid of the cell porous so the larvae can breathe. You can also see bees scent fanning by passing air over the Nasanov gland in the tip of their abdomen. 03.01.2022 Spring has definitely sprung! These bees out at our #westrac apiary decided to do a bit of excavating, or should I say evacuating. Swarming is a natural reproductive process of a honey bee colony, not necessarily desirable but sometimes hard to stop. I got out there the next day to inspect the hives and was joined by the lovely Georgie and Bronwyn who bravely donned their PPE to check out the bees. We found a queen, checked on honey stores and got the hives all ready for the rest of the season. . . #spring #swarm #bees #tomago #urbanhum
