22.01.2022 It’s a bit of a glorious mess in our rental permaculture garden, which is actually really lovely. Life is beyond hectic at the moment, with not much time between Tasks and Work and Chores and Commitments, and it feels pretty overwhelming on a daily basis. So to spend a couple of hours out here tonight, shifting pots around; planting a handful of summer crops (we went ‘shopping’ at our self-sown tomato seeding stand - it was very satisfying); creating makeshift trellises for b...eans and cucurbits to grow up as shade plants; and generally just Pottering, was an absolute delight. Being surrounded by the relative chaos of an overfilled, oft-neglected, imperfect space filled with ‘what we felt like planting at the time’ makes being surrounded by the chaos of an overfilled, busy life feel somehow less overwhelming. After all: if the garden can keep on flourishing in all this mayhem, it’s not inconceivable that we can too... If you have a space outdoors - no matter how small - to put in a couple of pots and grow something, it’s worth considering. You might end up with a harvest at some stage, or you might not. But you’ll definitely gain *something* along the way. 20.01.2022 We’ve begun picking jars for our friends & family Christmas Market this week. We’re doing things very differently this year, in an effort to keep everyone as Covid -safe as we can. No tasters, no chatting over mulled wine in the decorated living room. But all the same tasty homemade goodies, and lots of festive spirit to make up for it! #TUNXMAS2020 #theurbannanna #urbannanna #traditionalmethodsmademodern

18.01.2022 Christmas Spiced Fruit & Nut Chocolate Bark being made for our family & friends Christmas market. Lots of warm Christmas spices and citrus dust made from ground lemon, mandarin & orange peel we’ve dehydrated throughout the year make this a very special treat indeed #tunxmas2020 #theurbannanna #christmaschocolate

13.01.2022 Little buddy, staying dry in the rain. Our property was pretty darn sterile when we moved in just over a year ago, with tiles, pavers and lawn forming the bulk of the landscape. There were snails, slugs and ants living under the weatherboard, but that was about it. Since we’ve introduced all our food forest pots, we’ve noticed a steady and significant increase in the biodiversity here. We’ve got beetles, moths, butterflies, millipedes, slaters, spiders of all sorts, crickets,... and more. It’s awesome to see!! 12.01.2022 The first Sunday of Swedish Advent to us always means candles, mulled wine, taste-testing Christmas treats and decorations. We’re tootling around with dried citrus, herbs and paper to make some kind of garland to hang under our mantelpiece. We’ll just tie and thread and string bits onto twine until we like the look of it. The paper stars are a traditional Scandinavian craft that we learnt as kids, and we always make one or two each year, so it’s become a delightful muscle mem...ory that kicks into play when we pick up 4 strips of paper. Traditional skills and crafts were often begun like this: made by playing around with the simplest materials; passed on from generation to generation; and practised so that they became part of common knowledge. 12.01.2022 We’re calling this Gin Bling. Dried citrus makes a perfect drink prettifier, and whether it ends up in a G&T or a sparkling soda water, just one slice adds a lovely refreshing tang to the flavour as well. Zero-waste gifting can be delicious AND beautiful, and now’s the perfect time to be thinking about what you could make if you’re into sharing presents. ... We’ve reused jars that were donated to the Community Corner - but with a zero-waste back thrown in... Did you know you can buy replacement lids of all sizes from jar wholesalers in Australia?? This is useful when pickling & preserving, where it’s important for food safety that there are no dings or scratches in the lids. But it also means you can reuse jars where strong-smelling ingredients have left a permanent aroma on the rubber seal (curry pastes and salsa are notorious for this). So don’t throw out good jars just because a lid has been damaged or lost: even if you don’t end up finding new lids, you can always use them as vases in the fridge to store your green veg more effectively Permaculture Principle 2: Catch and store energy; 6: Produce no waste #permaculture #rentalpermaculture #permacultureprinciples #producenowaste #zerowaste #zerowastegift #zerowastechristmas #zerowasteliving #waronwaste #driedfood #dehydratedfood #slowfood #slowlife #traditionalskills #nannaskills #fourpillarsgin #tunxmas2020 #ginbling #driedfruit #festivefood #theurbannanna #urbannanna #traditionalmethodsmademodern

11.01.2022 Apricot update Our little apricot tree came from the discount section at a garden nursery 9 years ago, it lives in a rescued pot filled with no-dig layers of straw, compost and worm castings, and has moved house with us no less than 5 times. Growing your own food *is* possible even if you live in a rental property and need to be careful with budgeting!... 11.01.2022 Following @spiralgarden’s #52climatesolutions of this week, we’ve been feeding our plants with homemade fertilising solutions. We’ve got eggshells that were baked then crushed to a powder (they add calcium which is helpful in reducing blossom-end rot in tomatoes); dehydrated and powdered banana skins (which add potassium); and worm wee (a rich liquid fertiliser concentrate formed as a by-product of feeding all our food scraps to our worm farm). Potassium strengthens plants, c...ontributes to early growth and helps retain water. It also aids in disease and insect suppression Calcium aids in the growth and development of cell walls, which helps plants resist disease. It also helps plants uptake and metabolise nitrogen. We add crushed eggshells and powdered banana peels to each hole we plant tomatoes in, and every now and then they’ll get a spritz on their leaves with these two powders mixed in water. The worm wee gets diluted and watered into all of our plant pots once a month during spring and summer. Have a read of Spiral Garden’s post for info on why making your own fertiliser is such a great thing. They’ve covered loads of details!
