21.01.2022 https://www.lowcarbusa.org/jen-dave-unwin-ep64/ Low carb eating is not a fad diet, it is now a medically approved diet that is being used by medical GP's and alternative practitioners to help people reverse not only T2 Diabetes but obesity, heart disease, mood disorders and gut issues. If you have a general interest or would like to know more, then I encourage you to listen to this enlightening interview with Dr Unwin from the UK and his experience with this style of eating and the results his clients have had.

18.01.2022 The connection between carbohydrate intake, weight gain and T2 diabetes. Excess carbohydrate intake places a large metabolic load on the body. When the body is constantly presented with fast absorbing glucose (the end point of food sugar and starch metabolism) within the diet, it places a lot of stress on the energy cells (called Mitochondria) that are responsible for cellular function that regulates fat metabolism and energy function needed for glucose uptake. This results... in poor metabolic health that can increase our risk to inflammatory disorders such as heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. The problem is that most of us don't equate hidden sugars in our food and the fact that refined grains and starches are converted into glucose. Once we hit our daily energy needs for glucose or if we have become insulin resistant, that glucose with be stored as fat within our tissues. This will not be a problem for everyone, but for those who are struggling with energy issues, weight gain and have been told that there cholesterol or blood sugars are too high, this is the answer to helping the body by removing or limiting these foods in the diet. So if you are eating a cup of pasta, 2 slices of bread and 1 cup of rice per day, your sugar intake would equal a whooping 42 tsp of sugar per day. Most of the diseases we are faced with today are a result of poor dietary intake of too many carbs and not enough protein, good fats and fibre (vegetables other than starchs) as well as poor lifestyle habits. If you need help with your diet or are struggling to mange your weight, now is the time to book a health review.

15.01.2022 https://www.nih.gov//nih-study-compares-low-fat-plant-base What is the optimal diet for human health? When would we consider a low carb animal based diet vs a plant based vegan diet? The National Institute of Health has just completed a detailed review of two forms of diets and the results show that both a low carb animal based diet is just a healthy as a plant based diet when it come to weight loss. Both diets were based on whole foods that contained minimal starchy car...bohydrates as well as no procressed or junk foods. The main difference can be seen when we start to look at insulin levels in the body and this is where the low carb animal based diet showed more promising results in body composition and weight control. The common thread in this study is that these diets excluded starchy carbohydrates such as bread, potato, rice and pasta and that they were low in refined sugar and contained no food preservatives, colourings or addatives. Another interesting point was that during the study, the participants were not restricted in the quanity of food they ate but researchers found that most people's intake of food did reduce thereby resulting in weight loss. Its seem clear that the main cause of issues related to appetite control and weight managment is the inclusion of highly processed foods and eating starchy carbohydrates in our diets that raise insulin levels that leads to the cause of disease. This study shows that the optimal diet should be based on a clean, unprocessed whole food diet that is either plant based or the inclusion of animal protein for those with pre-diabetes or diagnosed diabetes. I would add in here that this would be better if we were to eat locally and seasonaly so we can enhance the variety of foods in our diets eat according to the way nature intended us to eat.

08.01.2022 https://www.fatlotofgood.com.au/ What does T2 diabetes have incommon with the western diet? The answer is refined carbohydrate and processed sugar that has been shown to cause a metabolic change in the body that leads to heart disease, obesity, chronic inflammation and a whole list of other general health issues. ... This week the Baker Institute in Melb put out a press release stating that the current medical and dietician guidelines to treating obesity and T2 diabetes must be reviewed and that a low carbohydrate and sugar free diet is the recommended treatment that should be given. As well, Dr Peter Brukner has just released the new defeatDiabetes APP - see below that now helps patients follow the new recommendations. I have also added in Peter's book called A fat lot of Good that I reviewed in 2019 when it was released. I find that one of the biggest problems we have today is that we don't have any clear dietary and food guidelines. We have so much miss information available that most people feel confused and lost. The new low carb and no sugar recommendations are not for everyone. Some people can tolerate both refined in small amounts as well as whole carbohydrates in their diet and have no issues at all. Whilst others with insulin sensitivity and genetic factors will find they have less intolerance to grains and sugars in their diet, and food in general. These are the people that also do well on Intermittent fasting (skipping a meal daily or a few times a week) to help manage the blood insulin levels and weight gain. We have seen a big movement in the past 2yrs towards a more vegan and or vegetarian diet but this is not a diet that suits everyone either. Thats the secret, finding the diet that suits you and your genes and not the one that everyone is currently following. If you would like to have a look at the new APP see the link below. There is a fee attached to the APP;1yr $99 or 3mths $49.99 but the APP has a whole range of education less, dietary information, blood tests and info for your GP as well as recipes and general tips. New APP for managing and supporting nutritional care; https://www.defeatdiabetes.com.au/ can be downloaded from the APP store on your phone or computer.

03.01.2022 Optimise your gut health - a winter staple to support our total wellbeing. Stewed apples are a tasty simple snack, or even meal, that help reduce inflammation in the gut, whilst promoting a healthy environment for beneficial bacteria to flourish. Eating stewed apples on a regularly can help with reduce symptoms associated with most functional issues of the gut that include bloating, pain and constipation. Conditions such as FODMAP & IBD (Irritable bowel disease), I suggest... consulting with a practitioner on the most appropriate diet for your condition if it is in an active or acute stage before using the recipe below. When it comes to supporting our gut health, starting with food is the best remedy in most cases. You may have heard that bone broth and probiotics support gut health, but what about stewed apples? If you have a reactivity to apples, possible due to a cross reactivity with birch pollen or latex, pears often a good alternative. Stewed apples have been shown to reduce inflammation in the gut when used as a therapeutic treatment. Eating them regularly can help with IBS, bloating, and constipation as well as many other conditions associated with chronic inflammation. The recipe below was presented by Dr Michael Ash at a conference in Melb many years ago. It has become so successful that is it now used worldwide by many practitioners that focus on gut health. The Larch arabinogalactins are an optional extra and can be replaced with any prebiotic fibre that is available from our clinic. I like to add a tsp of organic cow's ghee to my mix before eating due to the health benefits and rejuvenation properties of ghee. A good quality probiotic is suggested and can be mixed into the apples just before eating.

03.01.2022 Skin Exfoliation - is there a benefit in peeling the skin and when is it a problem? Most people believe the surface of the skin is covered by dead, useless cells that make the skin look dull, prevent the skin from breathing and can clog up the follicles. We have been educated by social media and marketing companies that believe by scrubbing the surface of the skin, we are making the skin bright and fresh again.... It is essential that we protect and enhance the cells that line the top layer of the skin as these cells are in fact the mature functioning cells of the skin and they are there for a special purpose. You may feel as though your skin is healthy and glowing after exfoliation, you may even feel that this is helping your skin, but the truth is that you have exposed immature cells to pollution, UV rays and oxygen long before nature intended or equipped them to cope with these hazards. The cells are shocked by this sudden exposure and cannot truly perform their function of protection because they themselves require protection from the mature cells that have now been scrubbed away. Hydration will be lost through these vulnerable cells as they try to adapt to this sudden harsh environment. After a few days, the skin will feel dry, and the surface will be dull and lacklustre. Bearing in mind how good the skin looked immediately after the exfoliation, it seems that the obvious answer is to repeat the exfoliation and remove these offending dead cells again and again! And so, the cycle of damage goes on. If you want to truly care for the health of your skin and want to support the longevity of your skin, then I advised all my clients to never use harsh scrubs on their skin and never use beauty treatments that aim to remove the surface layer of the skin. If you want to improve the glow and texture of your skin, treat it with care, nourish it with whole food and avoid chemically laden skin care products that use scrubs and peels to brighten the surface of the skin. Dermaviduals is the only true skin care range that supports the health of the skin for every stage of your life. If you would like to know about our product range and treatments please contact the clinic and book in for a skin assessment.
