20.01.2022 Urrbrae House viewed from the Twentieth Century Rose Garden as a change in the weather approaches

19.01.2022 With its ruffled blooms, it is not hard to see how Permanent Wave got its name. Our Rose of the Day was bred in the Netherlands by Mathias Leenders (1883-1958) and released in 1932. This fragrant Floribunda rose produces carmine red, semi-double blooms in clusters and is repeating flowering. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #waitecampus #redroses #rosesofinstagram #rosebreeding #dutchrose #floribunda #permanentwaverose #mathiasleenders #historyofroses #urrbrae #twentiethcenturyrosegarden

18.01.2022 It is not hard to see how Crimson Glory, our Rose of the Week, got its name. This velvety, dark red Hybrid Tea rose was bred in Germany by Wilhelm J.H. Kordes II (1891-1976) and introduced into Australia in 1936. The rose has a strong damask fragrance and is repeat flowering. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #redroses #crimsonglory #hybridtearose #wilhelmkordes #kordesroses #rosesofinstagram #rosebreeding #historyofroses #twentiethcenturyrosegarden #publicgardens #rosegarden #germanrose

18.01.2022 A rose a day for the next six days...

16.01.2022 One of the things we love about winter is that camellias are in bloom. A gorgeous bowl of beautiful flowers on the Main Hall table by volunteer flower arranger Joy Middleton has welcomed University guests this week. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #historicalhomesofinstagram #historichouse #historichousemuseum #camellia #camellias #winterflowers #winterblooms #floralart #volunteers

15.01.2022 Once again the Christmas Tree in the Main Hall of Urrbrae House will be a collection point on the Waite Campus for The Smith Family's Toy and Book Appeal. If you would like to donate a new toy or book for a child aged 0-12 years, you can drop your gift at Urrbrae House from Monday, 16 November to Tuesday, 1 December 2020 on the following days and times: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 9.30am-10.30am and 3.00pm-4.00pm Come to the Urrbrae House front door during these times, ri...ng the doorbell and one of Santa’s elves (Barbara, Sally or Lynette) will greet you so you can place your gift under the tree. As we all know, this has been a tough year and an especially hard one for Australian children living in poverty. A gift of a new toy or book can put a very big smile on a disadvantaged child’s face on Christmas morning. The Smith Family’s Toy and Book Appeal has been providing for children at Christmas time since its inception in 1922 when it delivered toys and sweets to an orphanage on Christmas Eve. Gifts should be of a size that they are able to be placed inside a large backpack. Please donate all items unwrapped. It is important that families are provided with appropriate gifts for Christmas. There are a number of items that cannot be accepted because they prove difficult to pack or are not appropriate for a wide range of children. We are unable to accept the following: Clothing, Food Products, Computer Games & Controllers, Calendars, No gifts that require batteries (unless you also provide the batteries required), Beauty Products, Toys shaped like Weapons, Breakable Items, Items of a Religious Nature, Second-hand or Damaged Goods, Hand-made Items, Organisational Branded Items. If you have any queries about what to donate you can telephone Urrbrae House on 83137110 or 83137425.

13.01.2022 With Covid-19 developments in South Australia earlier this week, we made the decision to cancel all of our public activities at Urrbrae House for the rest of November including the Friends of Urrbrae House Twilight concert scheduled for 23 November 2020, and all of our public and education tours. We have also suspended our collection of toys and books for the Smith Family's Toy and Book Appeal. With the SA Government's new restrictions that come into effect from midnight to...night, Urrbrae House will be closed until further notice and all Urrbrae House staff will be working from home. Please note that the restrictions also mean that the Urrbrae House gardens and Waite Arboretum will not be open to visitors/walkers for at least the next 6 days. If you need to contact Urrbrae House please do so via email [email protected] Stay safe everyone. See more

12.01.2022 After a short break, our Rose of the Week is back. This time we’ve chosen a gorgeous yellow rose Molineux. Introduced by English rose breeder, David Austin (1926-2018), in 1994, this upright shrub rose produces small clusters of old-fashioned rosette blooms. With its beautiful colour, good disease resistance and a slight fragrance, it is a multi-award winning rose. The rose was named in honour of Austin’s local football club, the Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Molineux being the name of their home ground. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #waitecampus #austinroses #davidaustin #molineuxrose #englishrose #publicgarden #rosebreeding #historyofroses #rosesofinstagram #yellowroses #twentiethcenturyrosegarden

10.01.2022 This pretty Ballerina has danced into frame for our Rose of the Day. The exact origins of this rose are unclear but it was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1937 by J. A. Bentall. It is a Hybrid Musk rose that produces masses of single pink blooms with white centres and gold stamens. It blooms continuously through summer into autumn. This hardy, easy to grow rose was given the UK Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit in 1993. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #publicgarden #ballerinarose #historyofrosebreeding #rosecollection #hybridmuskrose #twentiethcenturyrosegarden #rosecollection #urrbrae #waitecampus

10.01.2022 Dr Hogg is our third Rose of the Day. This gorgeous magenta to violet-red rose is another hardy Hybrid Perpetual rose. Bred in England before 1880 by Philip and Thomas Laxton, it was introduced into Australia in 1885. It is a repeat flowering, fragrant rose. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #waitecampus #historyofrosebreeding #drhogg #doctorhogg #rosesofinstagram #rosecollection #urrbrae #hybridperpetual #hybridperpetualrose #twentiethcenturyrosegarden #laxtonbrothers

09.01.2022 Exciting times as work has started for the creation of a new garden near the Battery House featuring Australian First Food plants. The development within the Urrbrae House gardens of a collection of plants used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as sources of food has been made possible thanks to funding from the Yitpi Foundation. We’re looking forward to sharing more information as the garden progresses. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #waitecampus #yitpifoundation #yitpi #indigenousknowledge #firstfoodplants #australianindigenousplants #firstnations #firstpeoples

07.01.2022 Our second Rose of the Day is an Old Hybrid Perpetual Rose, Frau Karl Druschki. Released in 1901, this pure white rose is also known as Snow Queen. Developed by Peter Lambert (1859-1939), a German rose breeder from Trier, this hardy, repeat flowering rose has no fragrance. As you can see in this photo, its beautiful double blooms tend to ball in wet weather. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #whiteroses #fraukarldruschki #peterlambert #germanroses #rosesofinstagram #publicgarden #historyofroses #rosebreeding #twentiethcenturyrosegarden #waitecampus

02.01.2022 After our memorable week in South Australia, it seemed fitting to end this week’s Rose of the Day posts with this beautiful , fragrant apricot Floribunda rose named Howard Florey. Bred in South Australia by George L. Thomson in 1999, it was released by Ross Roses as a charity rose with sales benefitting medical research. It is named in honour of South Australian pharmacologist and pathologist, Howard Florey who (along with Ernst Chain and Alexander Fleming) was awarded th...e Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945 for his role in the development of penicillin. #urrbraehouse #urrbraehousegardens #waitearboretum #waitecampus #howardflorey #howardfloreyrose #rossroses #georgelthomson #australianroses #charityroses #southaustralia #historyofroses #rosebreeding #rosesofinstagram #apricotroses #floribunda #publicgarden #rosecollection #go8 #twentiethcenturyrosegarden @uniofadelaide See more
