25.01.2022 What a perfect day for Croquet to recommence after just on 6 weeks. Association players had the lawns this morning and we have 3 sessions of GC booked for tomorrow. I must admit having a hit is much more exciting and mind stimulating than editing Coaching Manuals, but they are also important for the new ACA Coaching program. Play is strictly for Club members only and players must book in advance and their are strict conditions players have to follow, but everyone is happy just to be allowed on the lawns again.
24.01.2022 Answer to 13 Apr question References Rules 9.1.1 9.1.4 9.2.2(a) and 9.2.4(a) This is treated as interference. No fault was committed, so the yellow ball is to play next. For the red ball, it is treated as interference of a moving ball by an outside agency and the red put where it would have finished had it not hit Yvonne’s mallet.... The yellow ball was a stationary ball moved by a moving ball which had been interfered with by an outside agency and the yellow ball should be replaced in its original position. The blue and black were not affected by the interference and are left where they stopped. Today’s question is If a player commits a fault and, in the same stroke, one of the opponent’s balls runs a hoop in order, does the opponent score a hoop point? Check for correct answer in a couple of days - mean while share your thoughts in the comments
23.01.2022 Unfortunately at this point in time we are caught up in the lock down of registered Clubs not being able to trade. Therefore until further notice the Urunga Croquet Club is closed for all play. Management are trying to get the situation clarified and further details will be advised when known. The April round of Pennants has also been postponed and hopefully the situation will be clearer by the May round of Pennants. Members health is our main priority and we have to follow the Government guidance on social distancing.
22.01.2022 Answer to last question: Rule 6.3.5 The question implies that a fault was not committed. eg hitting the hoop did not cause a stationary ball to move. Therefore, a stroke has not been played, so the striker can still attempt to play a stroke.... Next question: Yvonne firmly strikes her ball which then comes in contact with the mallet of a player from another game being played on the same court. Is Yvonne entitled to replace her ball and play the stroke again? Same rules as before - place you answer, with reference, in the comments section.
21.01.2022 Answer to question from 11 Apr References Rules 10.3.1 10.5.1 10.7 11.1 and 11.2.8 RaY has played a stroke with the yellow ball (the ball he intended to strike). In doing so, he played a wrong ball and committed a fault. So, Rule 10.7 applies. This says to ignore the wrong ball play and treat the fault, Rule 11.... Rule 10.5.1 says that if a player accidentally contacts a ball with the mallet when intending to strike another ball, the accidental contact does not constitute playing a wrong ball. Since Rule 10.3.1 would have applied, it is treated simply as a fault, except that after rectification, play continues by the non-offending side playing the ball next in sequence after the ball that should have been played in the last stroke. So, play continues with the black ball in this case. Today’s question is Ken forcefully strikes the black ball which ricochets off the red ball and then contacts and moves the blue ball. The red ball then comes in contact with Yvonne’s mallet, bounces off the mallet and contacts the yellow ball. What should be done with the balls moved in the stroke, and which ball should be played next? Answer will be available later this week.
20.01.2022 Twilight Croquet on Thursday afternoons from 1600 (4pm) will resume now daylight saving has commenced. Bookings are essential and visitors are welcome, providing vacancies exist. Visitors can book by emailing [email protected] and normal booking arrangements are in place for members. Visitors are requested not to attend if they do not receive a booking confirmation by email.
19.01.2022 A full day on the lawns for the AC players as we hosted the Coffs Coast region AC Friendship Day. Great to catch up with players from Coutts Crossing and Sawtell after most events we usually catch up at during the year have been cancelled. Social distancing was front and centre with everyone, especially for a cold drink at C.ex Urunga after play. Thanks to all involved for making this such an enjoyable, yet competitive day.
18.01.2022 Answer for 5 Apr References are Rules 9.1.1 9.1.4 6.2.2 and 9.2.2(a) It is not a fault but accidental interference. The ball he stepped on should be replaced where it was before he stepped on it. It is the striker’s turn to play, so he should play the striker’s ball.... In walking back, the striker left his stance and therefore the interference did not occur during the striking period. Today’s question is When the striker attempted to run a hoop, his ball bounced back and hit his foot before he had left his stance. The referee ruled a fault. The striker asked for the hoop setting to be checked. Is he entitled to have it checked? What should the referee do? Answer will be available later this week.
15.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE Croquet NSW has now permitted Croquet to resume under STRICT CONDITIONS - we are now working with C.ex Urunga Management to determine how these conditions can be implemented to allow our Club to open for play. The final decision should be completed by end of April with play to commence in May if agreement can be made on how to implement the restrictions imposed by Croquet NSW. Members will be emailed a copy of the conditions, if and when, they are finalised.... All Club members are asked to confirm their email address by emailing the Club at [email protected] so we can ensure the relevant information is distributed to members when available. Please pass this information on to any members not on Facebook.
13.01.2022 Another perfect day for croquet. We were happy to welcome 10 players from Sawtell to join us this morning for AC on one lawn and Ricochet on the other. A reminder to all that twilight GC has commenced on a Thursday afternoon commencing at 1600. Bookings are essential and visitors are welcome to join in providing we don’t exceed our lawn limitations of 8 per lawn. For bookings visitors can simply email [email protected] and members the normal booking methods.
12.01.2022 From 1 July we will be accepting bookings from visitors to play on our normal playing days. With player numbers limited to 16 for each session, our members will have preference at all sessions. Booking can be made by emailing [email protected] and, if your booking is successful, you will get a confirmation email. Please do not attend the Club unless you have a confirmed booking. A number of visitors to the area have contacted the Club in the last two months and due ...to limited numbers we have been unable to accommodate them so it is great to once again accept visitors. If you require details of our normal playing days / times please leave a comment and a member of the Committee will get back to you.
10.01.2022 Answer to question from 3 Apr: Reference is Rule 9.2.4 Yvonne is entitled to (in fact must) play the stroke again if the main intended outcome of the stroke was still in doubt when the interference occurred. If that outcome was not in doubt, the ball is to be placed where the players (or referee, if present) judge that it would have stopped if there had been no interference.... Today’s question is: The striker took his stance in preparation to play his shot. He then walked backwards to line his shot up again and, in doing so, stepped on a ball. Has he committed a fault? What should happen to the ball he stepped on? Which ball should be played next? Again write your answers in the comments and the reference / references.
10.01.2022 Answer to question from 9 Apr References Rules 6.4.2 and 15.1.4 The referee should try to determine who had a better view of where the ball was before it moved. If the referee decided that RaY had the better view, he should accept that player’s opinion. Otherwise, he should ask BaB (the player of the stroke) if there was ant doubt the ball was clear of the playing side of the hoop before it moved (in other words, whether its position had needed resting). If BaB said there ...was no doubt, then the ball should be put back in a position such that the hoop was scored. if BaB said that, although he was confident the ball had run the hoop, there was enough doubt that it would have needed testing, then the five second rule would not apply, and the ball would be left where it finally came to rest after moving. Today’s question is In a singles game RaY should have played the red ball but in error attempted to play the yellow ball, but on the backswing touched the blue ball with the mallet. He pulled out of the stroke and his mallet did not touch the yellow ball. What is the remedy here? My answer will be available in a couple of days - please use comments to record your answer with reference / references.
10.01.2022 Answer to 7 Apr question Reference Rule 9.5 The player is entitled to have the hoop and ball checked and, if necessary, adjusted or exchanged. If it is found that the ball does touch both uprights of the hoop on some axis and the referee believes that the fault was only committed because of the faulty equipment, he should waiver the fault. If so, then the striker can chose to leave his ball where it stopped or to replay the stroke after his ball has been replaced. Rule 9.5.... also covers other balls moved by the stroke. Today’s question is below BaB has tried to run hoop 8 with the black ball. Neither BaB nor RaY do anything at this stage to indicate whether the attempt was successful. After at least five seconds but before the next ball is played the black ball moves and finishes not through the hoop. BaB says the ball is to be replaced where it originally came to rest having scored the hoop. RaY agrees the ball had moved after at least five seconds but does not agree that it had originally stopped in a position where it had run the hoop. The referee is called for a ruling. How should he proceed? Once again answers and reference / references in the comments so everyone can see your thinking.
03.01.2022 While we are unable to get on the lawns for a game let’s use this time as an opportunity to brush up on the Rules. Every couple of days I will add a question and you can answer it in the comments - please include the Rule reference so others can check your response. Today’s question is related to Rule 6 - The Turn, Striking Period and Stroke. ... The striker attempts to strike his ball which is 10 inches from a hoop. His mallet hits a hoop upright but completely misses coming in contact with any ball. What happens next? Ok over to you for your answers - I will post the correct response with the next question.
