11.01.2022 Raiders div 1 match report. For the third time this season the Urunga Raiders took on new comers to first tier football Maclean. The weather was perfect and the morning winds had all but disappeared. The pitch however which has seen a lot of traffic is showing a few signs of wear and tear, not quite as smooth a playing surface as it was. Not ideal for a team that plays 90 % of its football on the deck, but better than a lot of the others in the district. Maclean turned up wi...Continue reading

07.01.2022 Urunga vikingings vs orara in the grandfinal: It was an excited Raiders team that arrived at C.Ex International Stadium at the unaccustomed time of 8am to prepare for their Grand Final match against the Upper Orara Dingoes. The day was glorious but heating up and it promised to be a warm encounter between the top two sides in Division 3. The Raiders were at full strength, but a chest infection during the week to star player Ashley Sticker meant that she would be taking the fi...Continue reading

02.01.2022 Raiders 2nd div match report. The Urunga Raiders Second Division Women stepped out on to the Patch on a beautiful June Saturday for their Round 9 clash against Sawtell. It was an important test for the Raiders as Sawtell started the round 3 points above them in fourth. The defence was forced into a reshuffle with the absence of the regular central pairing Sarah Ludwig and Jascionda Connolly, and it was Sophie Smith and Gabby King who were tasked with controlling the pacey Sa...wtell attack. Otherwise, it was pretty much a full turnout as the team looked to bolster their semi final chances. The first half was close and hard fought. The Sawtell team were physical and direct looking to get the ball quickly in behind the Raiders defence, but the back four stayed solid, with Smith and King controlling the centre and Zara O’Connor and Makaylah Cavanagh-Rose holding up the flanks. The midfield trio of captain Akira Kelly, Gabby Kelsey and Alex Cowan were trying to make combinations and bring the team forward but were having trouble against an aggressive Sawtell defence. Arkie Daro and Leili Couper had some half-chances to get in behind and Summer Hogan was working tirelessly in the central striker role but the teams went in 0-0 at the break. Sawtell managed to grab the first goal from a corner shortly after the break. Tally Doye managed to get a hand to a dangerous cross, but the ball dropped to a Sawtell player who was able to poke it home. It was an unfortunate goal to concede as the defence had been looking good. Mattiah Beelitz had come on by this stage and was as steady as always. Kehaualani Morris had also come on up front to help with the final third combinations. But when the Raiders goal came, it was also from a set piece. Morris played in a lovely ball from deep that the Sawtell defence couldn’t deal with and Kelly was on hand to slot the ball under the advancing keeper and into the back of the net. The game was delicately balanced at 1-1, and Sawtell created a couple of great chances by going long early to their lightning quick striker. Fortunately, Tally Doye was having another inspired game in goal and pulled off two spectacular one-on-one saves to keep the Raiders in the game. In the end, neither side could find a winning goal and it finished 1-1. It was great to see Kelly and O’Connor back after a stint in first grade, and their contributions were enormous. The defence again looked good, with Smith and King working extremely well together. The attacking players were not able to create as many good chances as they would have liked but their effort and endeavour lasted the full ninety minutes. The team will be in good shape for their return match against Coffs United next week, who will likely find things a little more difficult than they were in Week 1. This Urunga side has grown considerably since then. See more

01.01.2022 Raiders 2nd div match report. The Raiders Second Division Women were looking to make it three wins on the trot, but it would be a tough ask on a windy afternoon at Corindi. The Breakers are a hard-running and aggressive side, and a couple of late withdrawals and call-ups to the firsts team meant that the team only had nine players on the day. The defence was looking solid, with Tally Doye in goal and Mattiah Beelitz, Sarah Ludwig, Jascinda Connolly and Sophie Smith in front o...Continue reading
