25.01.2022 Hi all, Couple of emails in. This one from Barkarate. Have not heard of them or listened so go for it. G'day Given most of us are stuck at home and can't go sailing, I just wanted to reach out and let you know about us. We thought your members might enjoy what we do and want to listen in - please share this email with them if you do.... Bar Karate, (the action of describing a close tack or lee-bow with your hands in the bar after the race) is a sailing podcast with very simple goals - to be fun, informative, or interesting. The hosts are all ex pro's who have the ear of most of the top sailors, designers, coaches and sailing companies in the World. Each week we publish an interview with someone from our community. Our underlying motivation for existing is to bring more people back into our sport. We do not take money from advertisers so there are no restrictions or guidelines as to who we can talk to nor events we can promote. We have a global audience, but are Australian based, so we very proudly mention events across Australia, to help our local yacht clubs. We are the number 1 rated Sailing Podcast in the World and we believe we are the most popular with regards to audience numbers. This email is purely to let you know we exist so your members can have something to make them smile whilst isolated indoors. The easiest way to listen is to go to your podcast player app on your phone, (if on android and you haven't listened to a podcast before you will need to download a podcast player app) then use the search function and type in Bar Karate. Otherwise we publish on Facebook and our website www.barkarate.com Stay safe.

23.01.2022 This one from Australian Sailing Australian Sailing operations update - COVID-19 The COVID-19 Pandemic has profoundly impacted the sport of Sailing. Sailing clubs around Australia have been forced to close their sailing and hospitality operations.... As a result, Australian Sailing has carefully reviewed its cost base and operations to scale back in line with what is happening at clubs and the broader economy. This has included a reduction in the number of staff at Australian Sailing. Clubs are the lifeblood of Australian Sailing, said CEO Ben Houston. Our priority is ensuring the long-term sustainability of our affiliated clubs. Like many of them, we have been forced to make some difficult but necessary decisions regarding staff and operations. "Australian Sailing is feeling the pain alongside our clubs, and like them our focus is to look after our people and to give them the support they need at this challenging time. Australian Sailing has undertaken taken several measures to support clubs, including providing guidance on all available government grants, lobbying government for rent relief and other support packages and reducing the scope and cost of its operations. Affiliated clubs have also been provided information on delayed invoicing for 2020/21 Club Fees to assist with their cashflow. Australian Sailing President, Daniel Belcher, reaffirmed Australian Sailing’s commitment to ensure affiliated clubs are supported despite the change in staffing support. Whilst we have been forced to make some difficult, but necessary decisions impacting roles and Australian Sailing staff members, the aim for the organisation is still to lead our clubs and their members through this crisis, said Belcher. It is in times like this that we remind ourselves why we are a member of a club, he continued. It’s not just about the sailing, but it is an opportunity to be a member of community and a part of something slightly bigger than ourselves. I believe strong clubs make strong sailing as a sport. Every club has a history, and we all now have an opportunity to contribute to it and ensure we all come through this together. Australian Sailing will continue to monitor and assess its cost base and operations as the actual impact of the pandemic on the organisation is realised. As a community, Australian sailors are tough, resilient and resourceful, said Houston. When challenged, we rely on those qualities to find a way through and thrive. I know we will make it through this challenge and emerge stronger and ready to face a bright future together.

09.01.2022 This one from Sails Magazine online SailsLIVE comes to you this week ahead of the Easter Long weekend. Normally at this time many of us would be on our way with the best possible boat speed to our favourite Easter anchorage. For me it’s usually Jerusalem Bay or America Bay near where I live at Palm Beach. But this year the mooring lines are staying in place. Even though it’s still possible to sail, rafting-up and the sort of usual accompanying espirt de parti wouldn’t feel ri...ght given the seriousness of the COVID-19 outbreak, and certainly wouldn’t constitute safe social distancing. An advisory from Australian Sailing this afternoon urges all sailors to think of others and act responsibly and stay at home. It’s the best course we can steer right now. Unfortunately, though, not everyone is getting the message. In Victoria, water police along with the Police Air Wing and volunteer rescue vessels were called-out to rescue a sailor who thought it was ok to head to Tasmania. A highly questionable call in the circumstances. In more encouraging news, the Whitsunday Sailing Club is forging ahead in preparations for Airlie Beach Race Week, scheduled for 6-13 August. Meanwhile, Ballina Slipways have come up with an innovative way of installing two new diesel Dtorque outboards into a sailing catamaran, which will help her owner sail to Cape Town next year. We also review the Dehler 30 One Design, which continues the brand's solid racing pedigree. We can still look forward to some of the big set-piece events of ocean racing and it’s been announced North Sails will be the official sail supplier of The Ocean Race, and we also look at the new Zeus Glass Helm screen designed for bluewater sailing. Keep well and stay safe this Easter, Scott Alle
