20.01.2022 *Volunteers wanted for research study* Hi everyone, currently there are on-campus participants wanted for a research study! They are seeking Japanese second language speakers of English. All the details are below. If you are interested in participating, contact Dr Michael Carey at [email protected] to receive a Research Project Information Sheet.... DETAILS: We are seeking volunteers to participate in a research study. The study aims to investigate the interaction between different variables affecting rater subjectivity in standardised high-stakes English speaking tests. It will investigate trained raters’ assessment of the pronunciation of two accented second language speakers of English whose accent has a varying degree of familiarity to the raters. Accented speech samples are presented as audio files to the raters in two stimulus presentation conditions: audio only and audio-visual. The relationship between the dependent variable of intelligibility rating and independent variables: interlanguage phonology familiarity, personality traits, and covariates: audio only/ audio-visual, gender and mono/multilingual status will be analysed individually, or in pairs when group sizes allow for this, to determine the extent to which these variables predict rating decisions. We are seeking second language speakers of English to record the audio only audio-visual samples which would be later presented to the rater participants. We are aiming to record the samples of 10 speakers of different first languages. The speaking part of English language proficiency of the speaker participants should be IELTS 5.5-6.0. If you volunteer to participate, you will be provided with a written text which you will rehearse and then read while being recorded audio-visually, altogether taking 1 hour. The recording session will be conducted at the University of the Sunshine Coast. You will be rewarded with a $25 gift voucher for your participation. The expected outcomes are an understanding of the interaction between different processes involved in rating familiar and unfamiliar accented speech. This project will generate new understandings of the mechanisms associated with interlanguage phonology familiarity bias in the IELTS speaking test.

15.01.2022 Hi everyone! I hope you’re all safe and well. Unfortunately due to the current circumstances with USC handling COVID-19, Hannah, Seina and myself feel it might be best to cancel club temporarily. Once this all blows over, I’m sure we will all be able to meet again and club will continue.... I was thinking about creating a discord server for club so we can all stay in touch, would any of you be interested? Please look after yourselves
