24.01.2022 Im in Japan currently, which strikes me as a country that is full of contrasts but it cannot be denied the way the arts are at the core of their national identity. But just as Im here presenting music that seeks to proudly share my heritage as an Australian, I am reading the news from home which shows there is little to no regard from our leaders for what unites and drives a nation. It is utterly dismaying to see the way the arts in Australia has been undermined over the pa...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Today's webinar: How to write a Parliamentary Inquiry Submission With the upcoming inquiry into Australia's creative and cultural industries and institutions, anyone involved in the arts should be contributing their stories and voices to fill out the picture. The terns of reference do allow for submissions to illustrate the 360/whole of eco-system overview of the arts and how it connects and contributes across all aspects of society. Anyone who's listened to me talk about art...s knows that I'll use its essential fundamental nature for the development of humankind. This may not be the Government that will act upon our wishes and requests, but we still need to put them on the record. Do not assume anyone is going to tell your story - make the most of the opportunity to be heard. The main thing is there are no secrets - I spend a fair amount of time explaining that (and way too many "ummms") but while there may be no secrets, I do aim to provide some tips and insights for how to approach writing an effective submission, as well as a bit of the "why" as well. For a PDF copy of the presentation and all links: - Email: [email protected] - Website: http://www.tuoa.com.au - look for the Blog - to be updated soon Website for Parliamentary Inquiry into Australia's creative and cultural industries and institutions: https://www.aph.gov.au//Committe/House/Communications/Arts Deadline for submissions: 22 October, 2020

20.01.2022 Remember the $250 million arts package for the arts? Were still waiting for the plan to be signed and released by the Minister for the Arts, Paul Fletcher. Its a drop in the ocean for an $111 billion industry in crisis. Consider that the national arts package includes $90 million in loans for the entire Australian arts sector to access, in comparison to yesterdays announcement that Dreamworld has been offered $66.9 million as a loan and a grant of $3 million by the Queensl...and State Government. And that were yet to see how restrictive the access to the package will be, with the general consensus that it will largely go to major organisations and companies rather than the huge number of artists and arts workers who have fallen through the gaps in JobSeeker and JobKeeper. But it is our drop that will do something for our sector to connect with our audience community - a mutually beneficial connection in high degree of need with a mental health pandemic developing - and contribute to our capacity to contribute to allied sectors such as hospitality and tourism. Coming this Wed 12 Aug is Arts Day On the Hill, a national day of advocacy, coordinated by National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA). If you are a practitioner, worker or lover of art - which covers at least 98% of Australians - your voice is needed to communicate the importance of support for our shared Australian arts and culture sector. Simply: call, email, phone, text, write, tag your federal MP and let them know your story regarding the arts - use the tag #ArtsDayontheHill Post here or DM me with any issues you want to share. I am looking forward to a meeting this week with Member for Cooper, Ged Kearney which is an opportunity to talk about federal support for the arts. https://twitter.com/abcthedrum/status/1291665444856672259

19.01.2022 Here are some stories of how artists survive from their art (or dont!). Ive been thinking to offer some insight to the financial workings of Origamis current tour... any one interested?

19.01.2022 Australias cultural sector is undergoing massive pain and loss at the moment... some of this is of course because of the current health crisis, but there has been a gradual erosion of Federal support since Abbotts Government saw the binning of Labors forward-looking Creative Australia was announced in 2013. Instead weve had 6-7 years of cuts, uncertainty, division and neglect from subsequent Arts Ministers. Ben Elthams article places this in context of recent Australia Council multi-year funding announcements - they had already been delayed and it could have been an opportunity for the Govt to actually offer some support to a sector that had been acknowledged as one of hardest hit. But...

18.01.2022 Thank to Attaboi for the opportunity and support in getting this article out there. Please read this week - there is a deadline coming up next Thu!

17.01.2022 Life has been upended for us all - but for those who were already on the edge, we may be uniquely equipped to find a path through to avoid the worst. Jazz and art music in Australia is no less affected than the rest of the music sector but without some of the support and infrastructure of other genres. Sharing and connecting is what we normally do through our music and events - maybe now is the time to work out some other ways which can strengthen our voice when we can once again come together in person. Thanks to ArtsHubs Richard Watts for giving me the opportunity to share thoughts and experiences about how the jazz/art music sector has been impacted so far by the coronavirus pandemic. https://www.artshub.com.au//coronavirus-australian-jazz-on

17.01.2022 Here is an overview of the TUoA Jazz/COVID Survey conducted at the end of May. Check out the TUoA blog for a snapshot of some of the results as well as an article with some analysis. While the overall impact is mostly negative, I try to outline some ways that we can use this understanding to find ways to move forward.... It was helpful being able to share some of these insights in my meetings with Ged Kearney MP and Kat Theophanous MP for my #ArtsDayontheHill meetings. But more work will need to be done in the future to follow up on various aspects of this survey and to be able to better understand our sector in order to communicate with others. This should be seen as a starting point. I would love your thoughts - and please share this amongst your networks.

16.01.2022 Today is the day - Arts Day on the Hill - a national day of advocacy for the arts. The sector has been left behind during the COVID-19 pandemic but there has been neglect for years. Part of the problem is just a lack of meaningful discussion. Today is part of an effort to build better relationships and talk about the value of the arts to our nation with those who help lead us. Join the conversation, talk about your involvement and passion for the arts - help amplify our voice.... Anyone and everyone can participate whether you are involved in the arts or not. Share your involvement and passion for the arts across social media with the hashtag - #ArtsdayontheHill Tag in your local MP and tell them what the arts means to you and why it should be supported. Or catch up with a friend and talk about the latest book that you couldnt put down, or the movie that made you laugh, or the music that made you cry. I will be catching up with Ged Kearney (Federal Member for Cooper) and Kat Theophanous MP (State Member for Northcote) - chatting about my practice, recent research Ive been conducting on the jazz sector and making a few suggestions about possible avenues of support. If you want ideas, you can ask by posting here or send me a message - or check out National Association for the Visual Arts website for suggestions.

14.01.2022 A big TUoA shout out to The Music Place for helping support the arts community through this project to engage an artist to create work, employ musicians to record the work and with all proceeds raised to go to Support Act, a charity dedicated to supporting music industry workers. 14.01.2022 Submission published!! 14.01.2022 "On the far right, a figure in silhouette, sporting a metal head-dress like an inverted funnel, looks across to St Clair, who is wearing a wide-brimmed black Spanish-style hat, his deathly pale features squeezed into a stocking, robber-style." Its National Book Week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you. Go to page 56. Copy the 5th sentence as your status. Dont mention the book. Post these rules as part of your status. But if you want to get a bit more active for Nationa...l Book Week - consider getting active to assist Writing NSW, the organisation main organisation for writers in NSW, lead by the brilliant Jane McCredie. It has been defunded by the NSW state government, in a funding round that saw only 5% of long-term arts funding go to literature. As Jane is imploring: If you care about this, please contact your local state MP, along with Minister for the Arts Don Harwin, and please ask your friends and colleagues to do the same. https://www.smh.com.au//writing-nsw-faces-existential-cris

12.01.2022 Looking forward to being part of this Melbourne International Jazz Festival panel on jazz and the current funding landscape. Im anticipating a mix of practical advice but also consideration of broader issues of arts funding impacting the jazz sector.

11.01.2022 Arts Day on the Hill - Australias national day of advocacy for the arts. Virutal Question Time with Ged Kearney MP, Member for Cooper I met with Ged Kearney earlier to chat about jazz, music and arts. This is just one conversation, but with people supporting the arts and being willing to look at how it contributes across both social and economic roles in Australia, like Ged does here, is exciting. ... At the end, we do touch on getting started on a National Arts Strategy. Ged is keen to develop that with us - letss keep this conversation going! Get in touch with your MP today and share your passion and support for the arts in Australia #ArtsDayontheHill

10.01.2022 Couple of questions for musicians: - how are you feeling about beginning to perform in reduced capacities? - what kind(s) of support will you require in the next 6-12 months? There are conversations happening here and abroad around the model of remuneration for musicians being broken (not necessarily caused by COVID-19, but certainly brought to a head!).... Any and all thoughts welcome - PM me if you prefer. And for an understanding of the broader context, check out this recent study of over 600 musicians: https://makingmusicwork.com.au/

10.01.2022 Here is a link to Melbourne International Jazz Festivals "These Digital Times" recent panel on the current funding landscape with a focus on jazz. Moderated by Andrew Tuttle (APRA AMCOS), the panel consisted of Chloe Turner (Creative Victoria), Steven Richardson (Creative Partnerships Australia) and myself. Youll get some tips for writing those upcoming grants, insight to philanthropic opportunities and some thoughts around issues of arts funding in relation to jazz and the broader arts sector. Please comment on anything that resonates with you or raises questions. These kind of conversations have to keep developing...

05.01.2022 A good start for #ArtsDayontheHill Just finished a meeting with Kat Theophanous MP, State Member for Northcote and Hannah Anyoso, chatting about jazz, music and art in Victoria. Kat was interested to hear my personal stories and about how my musical community is faring during the pandemic. Kat is already looking at ways to help promote and support the work of local artists in her electorate, as well as being interested in finding ways to contribute to the health of the State...s arts community. Thanks to Kat and Hannah for their time to chat art today.

05.01.2022 A great piece by Esther Anatolitis (National Association for the Visual Arts) in ArtsHub yesterday - outlining the way in which economic arguments against supporting the arts sector have fallen over - not to mention universities, casual workers and others excluded from Jobkeeper support. https://www.artshub.com.au//the-economic-argument-against-

05.01.2022 Sheesh - what crazy times!! To be honest, Im struggling to know how best to navigate the coming months - I know everyone is impacted by the current crisis, but for freelance/independent artists and artsworkers like myself, the next few months will be trying indeed. I may outline my own predicament/challanges later, but right now what I will try to do here is share articles, resources and/or information that I hope will be of benefit to those working in the arts sector. This... article has some great advice for artists as we head into lockdown conditions, especially in terms of self-care, as well as recognising we do already have skills that will help to cope with the upcoming challenges. More to come... https://medium.com/@payt/working-from-lockdown-2168e151153a

04.01.2022 This is a little late for Aus Music T-Shirt Day, but then TUoA is more than just music anyway - and actually, this might be a very appropriate t-shirt at the moment for those wishing to assist highlighting the importance of art at this time. Order TUoA T-shirts here (includes free audio track): https://fatrain.bandcamp.com//tuoa-t-shirt-includes-postage

04.01.2022 Here is an ArtsHub article by Jackie Bailey that resonates for me, clearly articulating how the arts benefits us in fundamental ways as a society, and making the case for this to not be lost in the discourse on the value of the arts, which tends to focus on the economic argument. https://www.artshub.com.au//its-time-to-talk-about-spiritu
