24.01.2022 EDSOC is opposed to the fee changes being proposed by the current federal government. As educators, we recognise the value of a tertiary education as a public good, not simply a preparation for employment. These changes fundamentally misunderstand the value of humanities and social sciences. These disciplines give students skills in critical thinking, communication, and understanding diverse points of view. These disciplines make our society better. These fee hikes leave no w...inners. While education students will see their fees drop, they'll also receive a lower quality education due to declining government contributions. Education students also studying Arts will receive the worst of both worlds, with lower-quality education and skyrocketing fees. It's more than likely that the government will not stop with this set of fee hikes. We know we need to oppose fee hikes now to stop future cuts to the sector. EDSOC encourages all students who are able to to attend the rally tomorrow against the fee changes. If you attend the rally, please follow public health advice: wear a mask, apply hand sanitiser, and observe social distancing.

17.01.2022 the black lives matter movement has taken the world by storm over the past week after we witnessed the inhumane death of George Floyd by four unlawful police officers. this has not only sparked an ember within the united states, but a flame fuelled by anger and injustice world wide, stemming from the injustice that black people have had to endure their whole lives. while Donald Trump is hiding in a bunker, his citizens are being killed, harassed and severely harmed fighting f...or equality - an inherent human right. it took 7 days of protest to get all 4 police officers arrested, but this is just the beginning. while we observe the events unfolding on the other side of the world - watching the news, looking at instagram stories and liking posts - we should also be looking introspectively at our own nation. Indigenous people form 2% of the total population, yet make up more than a quarter of those incarcerated! since 1991, there have been 432 Indigenous deaths in custody and there have been countless more before them. our national anthem proclaims youth and freedom, but our history and our actions say otherwise. David Dungay Jr. muttered the same words - ‘I can’t breathe’ - before his death on the 29th of December, 2015. these are words not uncommon within our context of injustice. so when, we ask, will you let them breathe? over the next few days, we will be sharing several Black and Indigenous resources (books, tv shows, podcasts, organisations, donations, petitions) that we have curated in order to gain better perspectives. we can never truly understand, but we stand. #blacklivesmatter #indigenouslivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd #justicefordaviddungayjr #amplifymelanatedvoices

10.01.2022 EDSOC is proud to join Clubs Against the Cuts, a coalition of clubs and societies at the University of Sydney opposed to the proposed fee hikes by the federal government. We come from every corner of the University community, and it's because of this that we know that these changes leave no winners. Arts, commerce, and law students will all be worse off, paying far more for their degrees. This will make it harder for disadvantaged students to access tertiary education and lea...ve graduates in a mountain of debt. STEM students will suffer, too. While student contributions for these degrees are set to fall under the proposed changes, government funding will also decrease. STEM students can expect bigger class sizes, less support, and a far worse standard of education. These changes do not have the best interests of students at heart. They will not, as the government claim, better prepare students for the workforce - they will saddle students with debt as they graduate. We know that the path to an accessible, affordable education for all students in these uncertain times is for the government to step in and properly fund tertiary education. University shouldn't be a debt sentence, and we're determined to stand up against these proposals to ensure that it isn't. If you'd like to be involved, visit Clubs Against the Cuts!

03.01.2022 as future educators and social workers, it is our job to be life-long learners and constantly inform ourselves on what is going on in our world in order to impact the people around us. making ourselves aware is one of the many steps we can take to gaining a better understanding of people, cultures, histories and stories. we have compiled a list of books, podcasts, movies and tv shows - fronted with a beautiful illustration from @jane_mount - in order to become more conscious of the society we live in. It is our responsibility to become educated!! #blacklivesmatter #indigenouslivesmatter
