21.01.2022 Have you ever felt like you were unprepared to diagnose a rash or jaundice on a POC patient? Many textbooks tend to show only one image of a lesion, and online ...resources must cover the rest of our learning - but how many images of POC patients do you see with every online search? Malone Mukwende, a second year medical student at St George's University London, felt alienated as a black student. He noticed a lack of discussion around clinical signs in non-white patients, and has been working on a project looking at clinical teaching on black and brown skins. The yet-to-be-published booklet, titled "Mind the Gap", will showcase a range of clinical conditions that often present differently on black and brown skin, in order to better educate the medical community. The images used in this post were taken from Don't Forget The Bubbles, which is in the process of creating an online resource filled with images clinical signs on POC patients!
21.01.2022 Have your say about nutrition education in medical school!! We are faced with a global epidemic of nutrition-related conditions including cardiovascular disease diabetes and obesity. Despite doctors being at the front-line of preventing and managing these conditions, we currently dont receive adequate nutrition education in medical school. AMSA Healthy communities are asking that you take part in a survey assessing medical students perceptions and preferences around nutrition and nutrition education! Your valuable contributions will help us advocate for the implementation of worthwhile nutrition education into the medical curriculum. Plus, you will go in the draw to win one of five $30 Coles/Myer gift vouchers! https://unsw.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cT25Aydkkvs0JKt

20.01.2022 UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE TO THE VICTIMS OF SLAVERY AND THE TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE 2020 As a medical community, it is our duty to acknowledge the role that non-consenting African-American slaves played in developing medical procedures and clinical practice. It is sobering to compare these historical cases with our four tenets of medicine: autonomy, justice, benefice and non-maleficence. 12.01.2022 https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00154-w With so much in the media about COVID-19, it can be hard to know which sources to trust, and which to be wary of. Nature (yes, THE Nature!) is doing a fantastic job at keeping the global scientific community informed on what's going on with their "Coronavirus latest" page. On top of that, the journal (and many others too!) and making all of their COVID-19-related research papers free to access for everyone. Truly a global collaborative effort.

09.01.2022 Hey hey GlobalHome friends, thank you to everyone who partied (remotely) with us on Friday night and donated to Deadly Connections, which provides legal services for First Nations Australians and also works to break the over-policing of young Indigenous people. We raised a WHOPPING $2000! Want to know where this money goes? Check out the infographic below! This does not end here, and will not end until Black and Indigenous lives are treated as equal to their white counterparts. We still have such a long way to go. #closethegap #blacklivesmatter

04.01.2022 Hey guys, sometimes when thinking about global health, we can forget that our work starts right here at home - tackling issues such as institutional racism is a global issue not only in health, but in pretty much any sector. 01.01.2022 Hey everyone, we know that Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights is a topic that interests many of us, and is very pertinent in both our personal and professional contexts. Over past Population Health lectures, weve seen just how significant issues of Sexual and Reproductive Health are, both globally and locally, here in our own backyards. If you want to learn more about careers in global health in organisations such as Doctors without Borders, how to navigate Obs/Gyn work g...lobally and the challenges faced in sexual assault trauma response settings, then this is the event for you! We are putting on a little discussion series on SRHR on the 29th August 2020 (Post KAT3), with views from people with extensive experience working in the field at home and abroad, with the aim of raising funds for the Birthing Kit Foundation Australia (a.k.a KIT International). Save the date, and stay tuned for more information!
