24.01.2022 Athletics Tasmania have today launched Tasmanian Athletics Historical Results, a comprehensive history of athletics in Tasmania. Several of our club members feature prominently among the many lists of results & statistics available, none more so than Hamish Peacock. Hamish is top of the list for most championship wins in a single event, with 15 titles in the Open Javelin event. Michael Mullarvey's long career is acknowledged in the longest career with medals list. Michael ...first found himself on the podium in the Open Javelin in the 1988-89 season, where he won a bronze behind Rod McCafferty and Combined Event champion Todd Apted. Fast forward some 31 years to the 2019-2020 season, and a Michael again collected the bronze in the Open Jav, this time behind good friends & club mates Hamish & Huw Peacock. The lists on the website are comprehensive and a must read for all lovers of the sport. Many people contributed to the publication, led by principal researcher & athletics guru Brian Roe. While the lists are almost complete, there are some results missing, in particular from the 1990 - 2000's. If you are able to fill the the blanks in any area, please contact Brian Roe with details at [email protected] Link to the results below. http://history.tasathletics.org.au/about.html

16.01.2022 Tasmania's Leading Ladies Milly Clark & Raph Corney have delivered some strong results to get their 2020-2021 season underway. Milly competed in the 5000m event in Launceston last night, running an incredible 15:41.05 to jump into second place on the Tasmanian All Time rankings, taking 6 seconds off her previous best of 15:47 back in 2016. Milly had a record-breaking 2019-2020 season, starting with an Olympic Qualifying result & Tasmanian Marathon Record of 2:28.08 in Jul...y before heading to the States in November to contest the Monteray Bay Half Marathon, where she finished in a slick 1:11.50 to claim the Tasmanian Record in that event. Upon returning home, Milly continued to produce the goods at the Cadbury Marathon festival in January, where she took out the Half Marathon Championship on a course record time of 1:13.01 to add the Tas All Comers Record to her growing list of achievements. Raph Corney has impressed early in the season, improving her Tasmanian Open Pole Vault record to 3.91m at the Hobart Interclub meet last Saturday. At just 19 years of age, Raph has an impressive list of achievements next to her name. She owns the State Pole Vault Records from U16 through to Open, is a multiple national medallist in the junior age groups and won Silver at the Oceania Area Championships in 2019. With coach extraordinaire James Fitzpatrick away in WA, Raph has stepped up in to the role of coach working with the junior vaulters while continuing her own training with James via video. Our congratulations to both Milly & Raph on their ripping start to the season
16.01.2022 It was a sun-sational night in Launceston last night for the first Interclub meet of the season. Sam Gillam had a big night on the track, running in the 400m-100m-200m events, with the 400m first up warming him up well to produce a big personal best of 11.50 in the 100m. The Launnie Spark boys got their season off to a great start with good results posted in the 400m & 1500m events. Joe Phillips backed up his win in the Balfour Burn with a strong run in the 400m, finishi...ng second in the Div 1 event. Doug Hamerlok, TJ Pieters, Corey Stanley & Jai Eccles lined up in the 1500m. Doug just got the better on TJ on the finish line, with Corey battling it out with talented youngster Jai a little further back. Shout out to Lachie Bonney & Sam Clifford for pacing the event Emily Canham caught the roadworks up the midlands and missed her pet event the Javelin but recorded a strong result to take out the Open Hammer. In Hobart, Nick Earl continued his return from injury, taking out the 5000m in 15.49. Interclub continues in Hobart this weekend with a Saturday morning meet. 09.01.2022 Just WOW! There’s little else to say after Stewart McSweyn claimed the Australian 1500m record at the Doha Diamond League meet Tonight’s result caps off a brief but sensational campaign overseas for Stewart, where he has claimed his second Australian Record in less than 10 days in winning the Men’s 1500m in Doha. Stewart entered the event with the best seed time of 3:31.48 and enjoyed a sit behind the pacemaker until the bell when he took the lead and surged away from th...e field. Racing against the clock, Stewart put on a show of strength, speed and confidence to take out the event in 3:30.51. The King of King Island is now arguably the King of Australian Distance Running. 14 August 5000m 13:13:22 Monaco 23 August 1500m 3:31.48 Sweden 29 August 5000m 13:09.83 Sweden 8 September 1500m 3:34.25 Czech Republic 14 September 1500m 3:32.17 Croatia 17 September 3000m 7:28.02 Italy (Australian Record) 25 September 1500m 3:30.51 Doha (Australian Record)
09.01.2022 Tasmania's Stewart McSweyn has set a new AUSTRALIAN (& Oceania) 3000m record at the Rome Diamond League meet Stewart's time of 7:28.02 was more than four seconds faster than the great Craig Mottram’s previous record of 7:32.19, set in Greece 14 years ago to the day (17 September 2006) and gives the 25yo Tasmanian his third National record after breaking the 10000m and 1500m(i) records in 2019. The most impressive thing about Stewart’s time is that he recorded it less than... 72 hours after winning the 1500m at the Hanzekovic Memorial in Croatia, where he recorded the fourth fastest time ever by an Australian of 3:32.17. Stewart’s time over 3000m is the third fastest recorded by an athlete in 2020, adding to his impressive world rankings in the 1500m (5th 3:31.48) and 5000m (8th 13:09.83). Congrats Stewy, we are so proud and happy for you! #beansingit

04.01.2022 Appreciation Post - Nick Earl The Athletics South Cross-Country season wrapped up this weekend with the Froggy Wise Memorial at Claremont. Following the event, presentations took place for the winners of the three named events held throughout the season. Nick Earl etched his name on to both the Graeme Cruise & Max Cherry Memorial trophies after comfortable wins in both events throughout the season. Nick has been a wonderful asset to the local athletic scene since moving to ...Tasmania in April 2019. A regular at the Athletics South Cross Country during his first season in Tas, Nick continued his support of local events throughout the Track & Field season, running in the distance events most interclub meets. In January Nick lined up in the Tasmanian Marathon Championships (Cadbury Marathon) for the first time after competing in the Half in previous years. Nick took out his first state title in the event and set a new course record of 2:18.29. Returning to the track for the State Championships, Nick finished with a set of medals from the Tasmanian 1500m, 5000m & 10000m Championships. Nick's results throughout his first season in Tasmania were recognised at the Athletics Tasmania Athlete of the Year Awards, where he was awarded the Distance Athlete of the Year (out of stadium). In addition to his impressive list of results, Nick has been a wonderful ambassador for athletics in Tasmania since his arrival. A regular at Parkrun and pretty much every fun run the state has to offer, Nick actively promotes the events he enters through his social media channels, encouraging others to get involved. Nick has been a great mentor for our younger members both on and off the track. In July this year, Nick competed in a 3000m event at the Domain to support talented junior Isaac Bonsey to a 17s personal best in the event. While Australia is not lacking quality athletes for our junior members to look up to, having someone on the ground with Nick’s experience to offer support & advice is invaluable to younger athletes. We congratulate Nick on winning the Graeme Cruise and Max Cherry Memorial events throughout the Cross Country season and thank him for his on going support of athletics in Tasmania. *You can catch Nick at the Ross Running Festival on the 11th October register at https://rossrunning2020.eventdesq.com/
