25.01.2022 Tri Nations Rugby Weekend! The club is putting on a spit roast this Saturday to enjoy while you watch the game. 15kg of beef and other goodies, and of course a bar stocked to the brim should make for a great night. Kickoff for Wallabies vs Argentina is 7:45pm but the club will be open well before that.... To help us with sussing out catering numbers, please comment below if you’re going to be joining the feast. Looking forward to seeing a bunch of you down there. Should be cracking match.

24.01.2022 We don’t play for adoration!! What a weekend of rugby for the men and women of UTAS! The Tarooni women set the tone for the day, winning all three of their matches after a long trip to Burnie. Everyone at the club loves a bus trip, and the ladies are no exception, with some even fitting in an active recovery session to Liffey falls on the way back. Back at our home ground, the club was packed to watch some great footy from The Convicts and The Rest of the World. Local super r...ugby talent scouts and spectators alike marvelled at the athletes who some might say are only just beginning to realise their rugby potential. Not to be outdone, the Red Men enjoyed their second win of the season against local rivals Hobart Hutchins Lions Rugby Union Football Club. A greater emphasis on maintaining composure and playing within the structures we’ve been developing over the past few weeks were key factors that helped us earn the ‘W’ in a tightly contested match. After some poor discipline helped the Lions to a fast start, strong words and leadership from some key players helped the Red Men regroup. A much improved set piece by the forwards set the platform needed to convert on some offensive pressure and get the backs the quality ball and time they needs to make inroads into the Lions defence. In a game in which the lead changed hands several times, the grit and determination the team has been showcasing in previous fixtures was channeled by improved teamwork and more deliberate gameplay into more scoring opportunities. This week, strong runs led to tries by Jarrod, Harry and our quality number 12, Liam, who went over for the winning try. Our thanks to the match officials, to the Lions for another close game, to the club sponsors, and of course to our spectators and supporters. Points for the Red Men were as follows: 3. Jarrod The Gardener Mabo 2. Zac It’s Brunchtime Pregnell 1. Remi a winger who can ruck?? Parsons. Well done all! Let’s get down to training and double down this week!

17.01.2022 After starting at the club in 2016, this season, we said farewell to our longest-standing women's player, Michaelyne Arumbi. During her time playing with the Uni Women, Mich has played with the Papua New Guinea National 7s Squad, represented UTAS and the University of Melbourne as part of their National AON Uni 7s teams and inspired so many of our players with her unmatched speed and clinical tackling. We asked Mich to reflect on her favourite moments at t...he club: "I don't think I have a particular favourite moment, I feel like every season has always been special playing alongside the gals and it's been an amazing journey/experience. Everyone at the club is so supportive and encouraging and I have loved that a lot. Each and every person I've trained and played with have made my time at the club special and I will miss it dearly." From all of us at the TURUFC, best of luck for the future. We know you'll smash it!!

08.01.2022 Saturday saw the UTAS Red men take on the Glenorchy Rugby Union Football Club in beautiful conditions for Tasmanian Rugby (Rain, hail and glimpses of sunshine). Our thanks to DUFF TV for filming the game, a link to which will be at the bottom of this post. Overall the match was a tightly fought contest between the two sides that entertained spectators for Sponsors’ Day. The Red men started well, converting early pressure into a successful penalty kick, then further increasing... the pressure with a well-formed maul close to the opposition line leading to a penalty try being awarded. However, some unforced handling errors and poor defensive communication by Uni led to the Glenorchy hitting back with a try of their own off a scrum, resulting in a halftime score of 10-7. Deteriorating conditions in the second half meant playing expansive rugby became riskier, and this was evident with several drop balls and unnecessary turnovers by University giving Glenorchy the opportunities they needed to take advantage of good field position, crossing the line one more time to take the lead (14-10). Whilst the Red men had several opportunities within the opposition’s red zone to take the lead back, so improved lineout work from Glenorchy, as well as further handling errors by Uni meant that none of these opportunities were converted upon, with the final score remaining at 14-10. We’d like to thank all three match officials who both sides thought did an excellent job on the day. We congratulate Glenorchy on the win and look forward to another tough contest when the two sides meet in Round 2. Finally, a big thank you to the crowd that braved the weather to support us on Sponsor’s Day, and to the Sponsor’s themselves, who are absolutely critical to the life of the club. Points today went to: 3. Angus Peters 2. Edward Jones 1. Rudy Matoy Naukomatau Match link: https://www.facebook.com/410903668925769/posts/3791290540887048/

05.01.2022 Saturday was a big day for the Tasmanian University Rugby Union Football Club. Ladies’ day was celebrated in style with the club hosting the state-wide Women’s Rugby 7’s tournament, as well as the Men’s XV match against Taroona Rugby Club for round 6 of the 2020 season. The UTAS women had a very successful day on the paddock, whilst the men put up a big effort but ultimately were outplayed on the day by a well-drilled and experienced Taroona team. The women’s tournament featu...red some of the best quality rugby seen so far this season, with every team stepping up and playing sevens as the game is meant to be played. For the Tarooni (Taroona + Uni) team, solid player numbers (13!) of varying experience all delivered their very best on the day and won EVERY match they played! What was even better to see, was players happily helping different teams, which exhibits one of the core values this sport is about: Solidarity. Well done ladies! We wish we could report similar success for the Red Men XV, but the lads came up against an experienced Taroona side that played some very strong rugby on the day. Whilst the final score (33-5) may reflect a mostly one-sided affair, spectators and players alike came away impressed with the grit and physicality that both sides exhibited for the full 80 minutes. Those who watch DUFF TV’s video of the match will get a taste of what we saw and felt on the day (link below, thanks again to Duff TV for filming the match). We’d like to thank all the match officials involved on the day, without whom we wouldn’t be playing. Congratulations to the Taroona men’s team on the win, and we are looking forward to hopefully having another match in the finals. Finally a big thank you to the vocal and passionate crowds that turned up to watch all of the matches on the day, and to those who stuck around afterwards to celebrate Ladies’ day. Men’s points went to 3. Harry What busted ankle? Let me take the ball up Jensen 2. Hamish I run faster because I’m vegan McLean 1.
