24.01.2022 Forensic Architecture analysed cloud formations to dispute an accusation by the Italian government that the NGO-operated ship the Iuventa was colluding with people smugglers, creating a hemispheric radar image to place events on a verifiable chronology. This investigation features in today's long read in The Guardian, and in #CloudStudies, now open at UTS Gallery. https://www.theguardian.com//how-rescuing-drowning-migrant

22.01.2022 On the eve of our reopening, a new report by University Art Museums Australia (UAMA) reveals the impact of university galleries and collections in Australian cultural life. 22.01.2022 UTS Broadway Screen is now showing Yamani, a mesmerising video work by Daniel Boyd that seemingly embodies the past, present and future. Boyd is internationally recognised for his engagement with the colonial history of the Australia-Pacific region and its representation in Western art. Drawing upon the discourses of science, religion and aesthetics, his work across painting and digital media reveals the complex ways in which political, cultural and personal memory is composed. While the UTS campus remains closed to the public, this new acquisition can be viewed from the street at 61 Broadway. Visit https://bit.ly/UTSBroadwayScreen_ to check screening times and discover more art on campus at UTS. 20.01.2022 Jason De Santolo writes on resistance to the McArthur River Mine by Gudanji, Yanyuwa, Garrwa and Mara Elders, in response to Forensic Architecture's investigation into fracking on the lands of the Mapuche people in Vaca Muerta, Argentina. Read "We All Together" in our accompanying publication to Cloud Studies, "Responses to the Cloud". Related texts are available to browse in the exhibition's reading room, including "Decolonizing research: indigenous storywork as methodology...", edited by Jo-ann Archibald Q'um Q'um Xiiem, Jenny Bol Jun Lee-Morgan and Jason De Santolo. Extract from "We All Together", by Jason De Santolo: "Our Ancestors forged determination in our minds through their courage, driving us eternally to shield our homelands from colonisation and the extractive industry. In the Gulf region of the Northern Territory (NT) mining giant Glencore recently received Government approval to continue operations of one of the world’s largest zinc, lead and silver mines, the McArthur River Mine (MRM) until 2047. Contamination monitoring will continue until 3037 - a thousand years after digging stops. Elders like Jacky Green help us to recognise the power of guardianship in the Rainbow Serpent’s eyes and fathom the immensity of this destructive timeline through actions, statements and resistance painting. When it comes to ceremony, we all together, doesn’t matter what tribe we. We all together, we must fight this thing [MRM]. The ground here, look it for Mambaliya and Gundanji Country...We been start as one and we finish as one." Image: Cloud Studies installation view, UTS Gallery, 2020. Photo: Jacquie Manning.

20.01.2022 Nikki Lam writes on the Wong Tai Sin locals, living adjacent to a Taoist temple, who defended themselves against tear gas deployed by Hong Kong riot police in August 2019. Her essay "Ascension in a Cloud of Smoke" appears in "Responses to the Cloud", a publication accompanying "Cloud Studies" by Forensic Architecture. Read or listen here: https://bit.ly/UTSForensicArchitecture "The next morning, many praised the bravery and miraculous skills of Wong Tai Sin locals. ‘We ...grew up with smoke from the temple. Tear gas is nothing to us,’ many claimed that they were in fact protected by Wong Tai Sin himself. They claimed the God of Health could no longer stand by the mess created by the Hong Kong government. Nothing is shocking anymore. It is as though they have been blessed by the gods with tear gas as offerings. They strike, protest and resist with force in the weeks and months following. In districts far beyond Wong Tai Sin, communities defend each other with an armour of hope. They have become virtuous. Tear gas, incense or smoke from a fire, it is not romantic with that stink in their eyes and that contraction in their throats. But for a believer it is strength sent from above." "Cloud Studies" continues at UTS Gallery until 13 November.

17.01.2022 Rarranhdharr (The Late Dry Season) is a collaboration between Yolu artists Patrina Munugurr and Ishmael Marika, commissioned by UTS in 2019 for the UTS Broadway Screen. In the film, a group of Yolu people map the various environments they encounter as they walk on Country at Yirrkala, the ancestral land belonging to the Rirratjiu/Gumatj clans. Under Yolu Law, the ‘Land’ extends to include the sea, and both are connected in a single cycle of life for which the Yolu hold ...the songs and designs. Learn more at artoncampus.uts.edu.au During NAIDOC Week and throughout the year, we reflect on and celebrate the continuing connection to Country held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. UTS Gallery is located on the lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation, while the UTS Art Collection is located across the lands of the Gadigal People of the Eora Nation, the Boorooberongal people of the Dharug Nation, the Bidiagal people and the Gamaygal people. 14.01.2022 We are thrilled to announce that UTS Gallery will reopen to the public on 22 September with Cloud Studies, the first solo exhibition in Australia by Forensic Architecture. Forensic Architecture are a research agency comprised of architects artists, filmmakers, journalists, scientists, lawyers and other specialists who undertake investigations into human rights abuses, state violence and environmental destruction around the world. Their investigations have been presented in ...international courtrooms, parliamentary inquiries and United Nations assemblies, as well as major recent exhibitions including Whitney Biennial, 2019; Turner Prize, 2018; Documenta 14, 2017 and Venice Architecture Biennale, 2016. The large-scale video Cloud Studies ties eight recent investigations by Forensic Architecture to a central theme: toxic clouds. In a year marked by environmental catastrophe, a global pandemic, political protest and social change, Cloud Studies investigates the connectedness of global atmospheres, the porousness of state borders and what Achille Mbembe terms "the universal right to breathe". The exhibition is extended by a publication that explores Cloud Studies from a local context with contributions by Joel Spring, Saba Bebawi, Jason De Santolo, Tom Melick, Nikki Lam, Thalia Anthony and Micaela Sahhar. The access program for the exhibition, comprising audio content and tours, is supported by the Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion, UTS.
