22.01.2022 With temperatures in western Sydney set to reach highs of 50C before 2050, new approaches to urban design are essential. Research by UTS and Western Sydney University for Landcom shifts the focus from technical solutions to cooling, to the role that commons play in adapting to the impacts of urban heat in our communities. The concept of commons means that they are accessed, enjoyed and cared for by the community, says Abby Mellick Lopes, Associate Professor in Design Studi...es at UTS and Lead Researcher on the project. The report released today, Cooling Common Space in Densifying Urban Environments, will be followed by an online Cooling the Commons pattern deck, a website that will give planners, developers, council and the community a resource for designing urban settings that maximise cooling opportunities and enhance liveability: https://bddy.me/3lgpCYs
