23.01.2022 The International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism is today. Today we remember the countless victims of terrorist organisations and acts of terror. The victims of the IRA, the victims of the 9/11 attacks, the countless victims of the Taliban and Islamic State, and those victims of religious extremism, such as the Christchurch mosque killings, and the Pittsburgh Synagogue shootings. We remember the victims, we remember the bravery of those who tried t...o save the people around them, and the bravery of first responders who lost their lives. We also acknowledge the deep xenophobia that Australian media perpetuates in their characterisation of Islamic extremists vs white supremacists, and the divide in how terror attacks occurring in Western countries are publicised differently to those in the Middle East/Africa/Asia. 21.01.2022 UTSoC's 6-STEP GUIDE TO A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS ... 1. Give the glitter a break When looking for cards and wrapping paper try to give the ones that are covered in glitter a miss. Glitter is made of tiny little bits of plastic that will never break down and is pretty hard to recycle (not to mention the fact it will appear in strange places months later). And if you absolutely can’t give up the glitter there are plenty of places that sell ...biodegradable glitter (just do your research). 2. Wrap in recycled paper Newspaper, last years Christmas wrapping paper, brown paper- the height of class! Here's some inspo: https://ecobnb.com/blog/2015//eco-friendly-gift-wrap-ideas/ 3. Shop locally We’ve all become accustomed to shopping online during lockdown, but that’s why your local shops and small business owners need you! 4. Shop for things that will last Quality over quantity, always. Choose your gifts wisely. 5. Get someone a goat! NGO’s like Oxfam and UnitingWorld’s ‘Everything in Common’ sell gifts that give back. You’re essentially making a donation towards a particular project on the behalf of the person you’re buying for. These are great last minute, sustainable gifts that have an impact (and make you look like a better person!). Interested?: www.unwrapped.oxfam.org.au & www.everythingincommon.com.au 6. Prompt sustainable conversations Sick of explaining to every family member that you’re still single? Card games like Reflex (https://flexfactory.store/) and The School of Life (https://www.theschooloflife.com/shop/games-kits/) are great resources to get those conversations to move beyond bad jokes and your love life.

17.01.2022 WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that the following post contains images and names of deceased persons. We’ve come to the end of NAIDOC week, and we hope everyone’s had a good one! You might be familiar with today’s historical figure - Eddie Koiki Mabo. Born in 1936 on the island of Mer in the Torres Strait, Mabo always had strong ties to his cultural heritage. Eddie Mabo was an extremely significant figure in Indigenous history, and would la...ter pave the way for the recognition of Indigenous Australians as having a rightful claim to the land based on traditional occultation and culture. He spent his life campaigning for Indigenous rights, and was heavily involved in politics and community organisations, quickly becoming a prominent leader for Aborginal and Torres Strait Islander people. He served as President of the Council for the rights of Indigenous people, and was also involved in the 1967 referendum that fought to include Indigenous people in the census, and allowed the Australian government to make laws that affected Indigenous people, as opposed to the states and territories. Despite facing blatant racism and discrimination, Mabo also started one of the first black community schools in Australia, which would result in Mabo joining the National Aboriginal Education Commitee. Sadly, Mabo was denied the right to return to his homeland at the time of his father’s death, mainly due to his active campaigning. The Queensland government controlled who could access the island of Mer, and Mabo was denied entry, saying that Mabo was ‘non-Islander’, because he hadn’t lived there in so long. This would fuel Mabo’s determination for justice and recognition, and in 1982, Mabo and his fellow Mer islanders Reverend David Passi, Celuia Mapo Salee, Same Passi and James Rice began their legal claim in the High Court of Australia for ownership of their land. Although Mabo would pass away before the case was settled, in 1992, nearly 10 years later, the High Court would rule in favour of Mabo and his fellow plaintiff’s. This landmark case recognised the rights of Indigenous Australians to their land for the first time in Australian law, and countered the British colonial claim of ‘terra nullius’. The following year, the Parliament passed the Native Title Act, allowing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to make native title claims over the land that was stolen from them. Eddie Mabo (alongside his fellow plaintiffs) would be posthumously awarded the Human Rights Medal in order to acknowledge their determination in gaining justice for their people, and on June 3rd every year, we celebrate Mabo Day, commemorating Mabo on his courage, strength, and bravery.
