18.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE New tool to help landholders when burning off Thursday 6th August 2020 A new online portal gives NSW residents the ability to quickly and easily n...otify fire services when they’re planning to use fire on their property. The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) portal means residents can use their mobile phone or desktop computer to lodge their notifications about planned hazard reductions or burn offs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. NSW RFS Lower North Coast Zone Manager Superintendent Lachlann Ison said by using the new tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify, users can help prevent unnecessary emergency calls. As we approach the bush fire season, many landholders are taking the opportunity to burn off but it’s important they do it safely and let us and their neighbours know. Landholders need to make sure they’ve obtained any required permits and permissions, as well as notifying neighbours and fire authorities 24 hours before lighting up. This tool makes it easier to notify the NSW RFS before conducting your burn. If fire services know about it, it can help prevent unnecessary emergency calls and firefighters from being responded. By using the new tool, landholders will be notified of any Total Fire Bans and will be advised to not proceed with their burn. Superintendent Ison said while landholders are encouraged to reduce fuel loads on their property, it is imperative that it is done so safely and legally. Before lighting any fire you need to have adequately prepared fire breaks and have firefighting equipment on hand to ensure the fire does not escape. Every landholder has a responsibility to prevent fire spreading from their property and there can be serious consequences for people who light fires and leave them unattended, Superintendent Ison said. To notify of your intent to burn off, use the new online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify. Landholders can still notify the NSW RFS by contacting their local Fire Control Centre. 16.01.2022 Please pass the word that the bulky good collection is not until 29th June - do not put rubbish out early as it will "multiply" and create rubbish tips everywhere. If you do not live in the Utungun area, check on the Mybin App as to when your collection will be picked up. Please be responsible. Putting rubbish out too early may encourage others to be irresponsible. Don't rubbish Utungun.... Please share.

13.01.2022 Looking through Trove - digitized newspapers courtesy National Library of Australia, the earliest referent I could find for Utungun was in the Clarence Richmond Examiner (Grafton) Saturday 18th August, 1894. It is a long article and would not reproduce well but the reference is as follows: CROWN LAND SALES At Macksville on October 16th: 37 town lots in Village Utungun, on Taylors Arm, Nambucca River, and about six miles south-westerly from Macksville: upset of town lots Three pounds ten shillings to four pounds. Suburban four pounds to ten pounds.

08.01.2022 This is a wedding photo of Caris (Caroline Ward) and Alfred Smith. They were married in 1919 in England before leaving for Australia. Alf Smith came from Lemon Tree, Taylors Arm and had a farm at Boat Harbour. (Alf Smith sponsored the Ward Family so that they could join them in Australia.) Sadly, their home was burnt down in the recent bush fires. Their son Alf Smith junior enlisted and attained the rank of Warrant Officer - he served towards the end of WWII and also in Penang and had several tours of duty in Vietnam. I know Bert Ward is featured in this photo, but not sure whom the others were.

07.01.2022 Delightful night at Utungun Hall last night - topped off by some serious rain. Thank you to all those who organised it. Great to see so many people. And, just a reminder - if you were impacted, or if any your neighbour have suffered damage, please make sure they register with Nambucca Valley Council. And, thank goodness for the rain which is now refreshing, not only our dams, creeks and the river, but our previously parched ground.

04.01.2022 Happy Easter to all Utungunees as we are all confined to barracks. Let's share some memories of times past. Yesterday I was talking to a long-term Utungun resident on the telephone. She was reminiscing how it would have been her 60th wedding anniversary yesterday and went on to tell me how, because everyone had dairy farms, weddings would be held around lunch time. They were married in the Presbyterian Church. The reception was at the Macksville Showground and the simple but delightful fare was sandwiches and home made cakes - slices had not yet become popular. Weddings had to be held early so they could get home, round up the cows and milk. That is just a brief part of the story, but I enjoyed it. What are your stories? Stay safe everyone.

03.01.2022 The outcome of the auction of the Crown Land Sales was reported in the Macleay Argus on 24th October, 1894: But one lot sold. An area of 2 roods to Chas. Frank, snr. This fetched the upset price, Four pounds.

02.01.2022 Have you seen the MyBin App. Download it and you will be easily able to check when your next bin day is. It also tells you when the next bulky pick up is - which for Taylors Arm Road, Utungun is 29th June. Remember do not put your bulky rubbish out before about 22nd June. We do not want mini tips all over Utungun. Remember it is also only for bulky goods - goods that do not go in your other bins.

01.01.2022 This is a very special photo taken in 1941. To the left is Chum Smith, next is Digger Ward, then Horace Ward and I am not sure who the next person is. Digger was Claude Douglas Haigh Ward, born in 1917. His sister, Carris Ward (Kit) had married Alf Smith and come to settle near Boat Harbour in the house that was lost in the fires last year. His other sister, Clara Ward had married Sid Fletcher. Almost 100 years ago, Digger came with his parents and other brothers and si...ster to join them. In just 21 years, Digger had a farm up the end of Little Thumb Creek and then enlisted. His brother, Horace, also enlisted. Horace was captured during the fall of Singapore and became a prisoner of war. Digger lost his life in El Alamein - never to return. Horace returned very frail and while recuperating at Epping, met the love of his life, Maud. Both men fought for their adopted country, one gave his life. From oral history, Digger was much loved by his nieces and nephews. See more
