13.01.2022 Mission Australia’s U Turn program will find out tomorrow (Friday, 2 August) whether the Tasmanian Government will provide the funds to keep the service open. Previously funded by the government through the Tasmanian Police, U Turn was told in March that its funding would not be renewed beyond September.... Over the last five months, Mission Australia has been campaigning to have the funds returned. Established in 2003, U Turn breaks the cycle of youth crime by working with young people who have backgrounds involving car theft, joyriding and other auto offences and helps them get their lives together. U Turn harnesses a young participant’s interest in cars by providing ‘hands on’ training in automotive, panel beating and spray painting, setting them up for future employment. They’re also enrolled in an intensive education and literacy program plus given two years of post-course support to help avoid their past challenges and slipping back into crime. As part of the course, each group of U Turn participants work on renovating and repairing a car wreck and gifting it to a victim of vehicle theft. Unless funding is restored, this week U Turn presented its final car to a young man who’d recently had his car stolen and set alight. Mission Australia’s Tasmanian State Director, Noel Mundy, said U Turn had been enormously successful in stopping offending behaviour and in turning young lives around. U Turn has been an outstanding success, said Mr Mundy. We estimate around 70% of U Turn participants have significantly reduced levels of offending or do not offend at all once they leave the program. Not only is it more successful in stopping crime than locking a young person up, it’s significantly cheaper. It costs us roughly $130 per day to run a young person through U Turn’s 10-week automotive training course in car maintenance and body work. That cost includes participation in U Turn’s intensive education and literacy program plus two years of post-course support to help graduates avoid their past challenges and slipping back into crime. In comparison, Tasmania has the most expensive youth justice system in the country. It costs Tasmania $900 a day to lock up a young person at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre - that’s more than $300,000 per year, per detainee. We’re hopeful the Tasmanian Government has heard our message that cutting funds to U Turn is a false economy. Short term savings will easily be eclipsed by the costs of increased crime, welfare, health and justice spending. Noel Mundy
10.01.2022 U-Turn and the young people doing good, right to the very end.
09.01.2022 Bittersweet news from Tasmania. Our wonderful U-Turn service today held its final graduation and car presentation. The U-Turn team has done a phenomenal job ove...r the years, giving around 400 young people the chance to gain automotive skills and get their lives back on track. Sadly, the State Government can no longer fund this valuable program. Congratulations and good luck to today’s graduates. We only hope that in the future young Tasmanians like you get the same chance to turn their lives around. http://www.missionaustralia.com.au//2857-u-turn-gives-tasm See more
