23.01.2022 Meet one of our talented anaesthetists, Dr Mara Schier Mara graduated from Murdoch University in 2007. Following a brief stint in mixed practice in north-eastern Victoria, she undertook a rotating internship at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. Instead of returning to mixed practice like she originally intended, she was distracted and captivated by the practice of anaesthesia and decided to pursue the discipline more fully and formally with a residency in veterin...ary anaesthesia and analgesia at Murdoch University in Perth. She is a Member of the Anaesthesia and Analgesia Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists and a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. She joined the UVTHS team in early 2017. She enjoys most aspects of veterinary anaesthesia, and enjoys working with students in the final part of their degree to gain practical skills in the final parts of their veterinary degree. #meettheteammonday #meetourteam #uvths

17.01.2022 Research into Leptospirosis in Australian pet cats You and your cat(s) are invited to take part in a research project to discover the prevalence (how common is the disease), risk factors for infection and associations with kidney disease of Leptospirosis among Australian pet cats. Leptospira infection rarely causes disease in cats but it can cause serious illness in dogs and humans and can be spread between species. The bacteria can be shed in urine and infection usually o...ccurs from contact with rodents and/or their urine. The prevalence of Leptospira infection of cats worldwide ranges from 0.6% to 35% depending on the region examined. There is no current data available for Australian pet cats. Recently an outbreak of Leptospirosis has occurred in pet dogs in some suburbs of Sydney. Leptospira exposure can be determined through a blood test, and urine tests can be performed to detect shedding of the bacteria. This study aims to use blood and urine samples, medical records and a pet owner survey to study Leptospira infection of cats. For more information or to become involved contact Dr Lara Boland on [email protected] or call 02 9351 3437.

04.01.2022 Archer is in remission! Archer is a 5 year old Great Dane X who was diagnosed with multicentric B-cell lymphoma in March this year. His owner noticed some bruising on his abdomen and large masses in the area as well as the back of his hind legs, which were enlarged lymph nodes. Fine needle aspirates of the lymph nodes revealed lymphoma. Our team took a biopsy of one of the lymph nodes and this revealed a less common form of lymphoma - late-stage marginal zone lymphoma. Arch...er is a rescue pup who suffers from severe anxiety and initially was incredibly nervous to visit the clinic, it was an effort just to have him walk through the doors! After some tweaking, including having Archer enter through a side door away from all the people and dogs as well as lots of positive reinforcement he came to love his visits and would always give lots of cuddles and vigorous kisses to all his nurses, vets and students. For treatment of his lymphoma, Archer was started on a chemotherapy protocol and also started on an immunotherapy autologous vaccine trial. The idea of the immunotherapy is to use the body's own immune system to fight the cancer cells. Archer has done so well with his treatment and not only has he completed his 6 month chemotherapy protocol, he is also in remission! On his last chemotherapy day, we celebrated with Archer and gave him a little gift and card to day a big WELL DONE!
