16.01.2022 All welcome to a panel discussion that is part of ANTH 1002 (Global Change, Local Responses--coordinated by Debra McDougall) Economic growth and global inequality. A panel discussion with Carmen Lawrence, Akram Azimi, and Michael Sheldrick October 17, 2013, 11 - 11:45 amOctagon Theatre, UWA... Has globalized capitalism made the world a better place? Some, like global billionaire philathropist Bill Gates, say yes. Even in the poorest places in the world, people are living longer and fewer babies are dying. Many measures show, however, that inequality has increased and some people's lives are improving much more quickly than other people's. In a world of increasing mobility and ease of communications, these differences are more obvious than ever before. If we agree with the anthropologist Marshall Sahlins that poverty is not just having what we need to survive, but is essentially a social status, can you tackle global poverty without asking questions about global inequality? Carmen Lawrence is a Professorial Fellow in Psychology after serving for 21 years in State and Federal politics. Akram Azimi is 2013 Young Australian of the Year. He is involved in many projects, including mentoring programs for young Indigenous Australians and campaigns to reduce global poverty. Michael Sheldrick is Global Policy and Advocacy Manager for the Global Poverty Project Links to background material Carmen Lawrence, The Growing Problem of Inequality, March 2013, ‘Thinking For Yourself’ conference, La Trobe University. http://bcove.me/hgactl6k Is Australia still the land of the fair go? 12.01.2022 * Interested in, or puzzled by, religion? * Looking for an elective or a Category A broadening unit in Arts? * Have completed a Level 1 Arts unit? You may want to consider enrolling in... ANTH2901 Religion and Globalisation The unit invites students to think about the place of religion in the contemporary world and its relationship to conflict, human rights, gender equity, poverty, the environment, and a range of other social issues. It is highly interactive, with lots of discussion in person and through a class blog. As part of a UWA-wide Religion and Globalisation Initiative and in partnership with other universities through the Tony Blair Faith Foundation Faith and Globalisation Initiative, the unit has allowed UWA students to engage with peers around the world and undertake intensive summer courses (held in 2013 in Canada and Kosovo). What previous students say: ‘This has probably changed the way I will approach these issues for the rest of my life even though I will not be continuing in this field of study’ ‘This was one of the best units I have ever done! I can honestly say that I have learned more in this unit, than any other unit at universityabout the live issues of the world’ Blog post on dialogue session: http://www.fgi-tbff.org//reflecting-uwa-q-religion-and-vio Former students Akram Azimi (2013 Young Australian of the Year) and Michael Sheldrick (now with Global Poverty Project): http://www.youtube.com/user/TonyBlairFaithFdn Handbook link: http://units.handbooks.uwa.edu.au/units/anth/anth2901 Questions?
