24.01.2022 Where in the world are our grads? Born and raised in Western Australia, Simon Malloch [BA 99] was inspired by two teachers at Lesmurdie Senior High School, S. White and H. Beale, to study English Literature and Classics and Ancient History at UWA. Simon is currently Head of the Department of Classics and Archaeology at Nottingham, has published a critical edition with translation and commentary of a major Latin inscription advocating the integration of foreigners into the Ro...man political process at the highest level (out in late August) https://bit.ly/31IXEeI Simon works on ancient Roman historians: "Some of their works survive, but in defective forms requiring careful evaluation to establish what we think they wrote or meant. The question then becomes: how to gain a full appreciation of the history recorded by writers with such different methods and agendas from each other and from us? Tackling these challenges to interpretation is immensely satisfying. I try to convey to my students that such detective work is not only fun but also provides them with important analytical skills for understanding the contemporary world."

24.01.2022 Poetry and science might be seen by many people to be rather odd bedfellows. However, poetry offers a powerful tool through which to bring together different audiences, and to give voice to those audiences that are often underserved and underheard by science.

09.01.2022 Dont judge a book by its cover. Appearances can be deceiving. Despite these warnings, evidence shows that people cant help but make rapid judgements of character based on a mere glimpse of a strangers face. These impressions really matter because they predict all sorts of social outcomes. For instance, children who look attractive are assumed to be smart by teachers, and are less likely to receive harsh discipline. Dr Jemma Collova will discuss how psychology research can ...help us understand how we form first impressions from childrens faces, whether these impressions are at all accurate, and how children learn to form these impressions too.
