24.01.2022 BREAKING BARRIERS: Ada Evans Ada Evans was the first female law graduate in Australia. Evans initially gained an Arts degree from the University of Sydney. In 1899, though aware that she would not be permitted to practice, Evans took advantage of the leave of Sydney University’s Law School Dean and enrolled to study law. It took her 5 months to enrol as a law student in the NSW Supreme Court, as at the time the common law did not recognise women as persons. Upon graduation ...in 1902, she struggled to be admitted to practice until 1905, where she was admitted to the Victorian Bar. She later was the first female admitted to the NSW Bar in 1921, however never practiced; instead, writing a weekly women’s page in the Australian Star. Evans passed away in 1947 in Bowral. In 1998, Ada Evans Chambers was opened in honour of her legacy. Know of an Australian lawyer you think should be featured? Dm us and let us know.

17.01.2022 As we make our way through law school and towards a legal career, there is nothing more important than ensuring that the environment we and our peers work in is... a safe one, free from all forms of sexual harassment and assault. We welcome the swift action that has been taken to counter these problems by the WA heads of jurisdiction and the High Court. We must do all we can to ensure that all legal professionals feel comfortable raising concerns about harassment in the workplace. This principle extends to students too.
