20.01.2022 The neat new paper out in Scientific Reports today stems from the work of PhD student Eunjoo Choi and fieldtrips conducted for the Masters of Geoscience unit MING5503 Ore Deposit Field Excursion. If you’re interesting in learning more about geochemistry and mineral systems, look into the Master of Geoscience offered at UWA -> https://www.uwa.edu.au/study/Courses/Master-of-Geoscience #geology #geochemistry #geoscience #fieldworkfriday
20.01.2022 Using state of the art analytical infrastructure, an international team of researchers led by UWA’s Prof Marco Fiorentini precisely dated and fingerprinted the magmas erupted from two-billion-year-old volcanoes, and present an exciting hypothesis: African volcanoes in Western Australia. 18.01.2022 Congratulations to the students of EART3353 who have just returned from their fieldwork in Kambalda! The 3353 crew logged core at a nickel-gold mine, and mapped... out the highly deformed komatiite lavas, subaqueous basalts, and volcaniclastic sediments of the Kambalda/Kalgoorlie Sequences. #FromTheField #UWASchoolOfEarthSciences #EarthScience #Geology #UWAStudents See more
17.01.2022 Billion-year-old life had a taste for titanium according to a neat new paper out in Geobiology by PhD Candidate Eva Sirantoine. Single-celled micro-organisms extracted from the Cailleach Formation in Scotland were examined under transmission electron microscopy at the CMCA at UWA uncovering tiny anatase crystals. The crystals have not broken the cell membrane, appearing to have formed inside the cell shortly after death.... This new find demonstrates the possibility of finding perfectly preserved micro-organisms that are one billion years old. 15.01.2022 Ancient Carbon has allowed us to move towards renewable energy production by transporting rare earth metals to within reach of the surface of our planet. Think of this carbon like large rockets attached to a space shuttle that provide the initial thrust to get the shuttle off the ground, but they are spent and lost by the time the shuttle reaches its destination, - Marco An excellent work from an international team including our own Assoc Prof Marco Fiorentini...
