25.01.2022 The UWA Guitar Studio has got a great year ahead with over half a dozen concerts on the calendar, including a tour of WAs South West and Great Southern, outreach at schools in Albany, Denmark, Busselton, and Perth, and of course the 2020 Perth International Classical Guitar Festival, presented by the UWA Conservatorium of Music. We were hard at work over the summer too - check out this fantastic video of UWA alum and all around legend Don Candy - Classical Guitarist, who wi...ll be performing with us throughout the year. Its going to be another exciting year for guitar at UWA - watch this space! https://youtu.be/JQ4YiUAVvp4

25.01.2022 Next up in our "Meet the Studio" series is Hayden Burke, a classical guitarist in his 2nd year of the Music Specialist dual major who has been working on the first two movements of Hans Werner Henzes "Drei Tentos" for his performance assessment this semester. We hope you enjoy his performance and our chat about life, music, and study. *What has been the best part of studying at UWA?* The best part of studying music at UWA has to be the tight knit community. All the students... are incredibly friendly and you can always be guaranteed to find someone in the common room, and the staff are also super approachable and knowledgeable. *Do you have a favourite performance that youve been involved in so far?* Besides the privilege of being able to do a first-year solo recital last year, the collaborative concerts have been my favourite. The Parallel Resonance concert in the Fremantle Town Hall with both the guitar studio and Pinata Percussion is definitely a highlight, as is the "Strings Attached" Guitar Festival in Margaret River from last year where we played in concert and shared backstage with all the WAAPA guitarists. There are so many unique opportunities that arise all the time and theyre all great experiences. *How did you get into music?* I got into playing classical guitar in year 6 through IMSS (back when it was SIM). I had no idea that I would fall in love with music and the guitar, but I did and it set me on the path that Im on now. In high school I had such supportive teachers and family. My guitar teacher Joe Bonini went out of his way to give me individual lessons very early before school and this definitely helped me work towards university. *What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself after UWA?* I think you should always dream big. Id love to travel and have a performance career internationally as well as balancing that with teaching. I absolutely love teaching and the thought of being able to inspire my students as I have been inspired by my teachers. I think Ill be around UWA forever. I hope to continue into postgraduate studies, and I wouldnt be the first of us to hang around after graduating. *Any advice for young guitar students who are considering pursuing music at a tertiary level?* Be passionate about the guitar and music. Be willing to learn and take on feedback. I love everything guitar, and youll find me constantly listening to all kinds of music old and new. This is the best way to stay determined to practice and keep getting better. Secondly, work out a practice schedule that works for you, NOW. Life doesnt get less busy; you just get better at dealing with it and prioritising. Having a set routine means you are more likely to do it. *Tell us a fun fact about yourself?* My other passions include watches, coffee, and scotch. Talk to me about any of those things and I probably wont stop talking

21.01.2022 Right about now we would have been setting up for the 3rd concert of the Perth International Classical Guitar Festival, which obviously had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. But our friends over at RTRFM 92.1 are dedicating an entire episode of Plucked Strings RTRFM 92.1 - Great Guitar and String Music to the UWA Guitar Studio, broadcasting a concert we recorded in isolation last month. Tune in tomorrow 6:00pm (AWST) to 92.1 or stream live at https://rtrfm.com.au/shows/pluckedstrings to hear some great performances by these fine young musicians. *Note - photo is from a rehearsal last year, before social distancing became the new normal *

16.01.2022 Next up in our Meet the Studio series is Alexis Chin, a first year classical guitar student studying a double major in Music and Psychology. While COVID-19 made for quite a challenging 1st semester of university study, Alexis has adapted with remarkable resilience. We hope you enjoy his performance of Leo Brouwers Estudio Sencillos no. 16, which he prepared for this semesters technical exam. **Your first semester at UWA has turned out to be quite an unusual one. How have... you gone with the online learning?** My first semester at UWA has been strange and confusing at times; however, I was able to adapt to online learning fairly easily. With negligible travel time and optional tutorials, Ive had much more time to study and complete projects. While I grew to be comfortable with online learning, I am highly anticipating a return to face to face learning as well as live performances. **How did you get into music?** I did not have a choice in getting into music. At the age of minus 3 months, I was exposed to the sounds of Vivaldi, Bach and avant-garde saxophonist Steve Lacy. My musical journey continued through playing violin and viola before picking up the classical guitar at the age of 11. **What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself after UWA?** International concert artist and a contract with a major record label; my mother says only after I complete a doctorate in Psychology (Im enrolled in a double major in music and psychology). **Any advice for young guitar students who are considering pursuing music at a tertiary level?** My advice to students considering tertiary music education is to go with your passion. Students who love music will find the music department to be a place of communion for like minded students, and staff who are both passionate and knowledgable. **Tell us a fun fact about yourself!** I am a direct descendent from the first Ming Emperor, although Im actually Greek.

15.01.2022 Had a great time performing with Piata Percussion at the Fremantle Arts Centre in our final chamber music concert of the year. A big thanks to all the percussionists and their director Louise Devenish for being such great collaborators.

15.01.2022 Next up in our "Meet the Studio" series is Fred Bjorksten, a classical guitarist in his 3rd year of the Music Specialist dual major. We hope you enjoy this video of Fred performing Marin Budos quartet Passing of a Black Star with other members of the UWA Guitar Studio as part of this semesters chamber music project. *How ...Continue reading

10.01.2022 An amazing piece performed by some amazing students. Alligator clips, plastic discs and foam blocks transform the sound of the guitar, evoking the textures and timbres of a gamelan ensemble. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/M6xFeVvihFk
