25.01.2022 EVENT: A deep dive into the world of ocean giants Wednesday 14 October, 6:30-7:30pm City of Perth Library, 573 Hay street Perth Register below as places are limited... Speaker Lucy Arrowsmith The UWA Oceans Institute UWA Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences Migratory marine megafauna are among the world’s most charismatic species. One of these is the world’s largest fish the whale shark. Whale sharks are found in most tropical and subtropical waters around the world, including at the Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. What is influencing the movement of whale sharks and what impact does a changing climate have on the future of this ocean giant? This event is hosted by the City of Perth Library as part of the UWA Research Impact Series

24.01.2022 FINAL REQUEST FOR INPUT ... do you work with young people and exercise or sport? Please see below an opportunity to provide research input on a Exercise Scree...ning System for Young People Researchers from The University of Western Australia in collaborations with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), Sport Medicine Australia and Fitness Australia are currently seeking feedback on a new Pre-Exercise Screening System for Young People (PSS-YP). There currently exist a number of pre-exercise screening tools, notably the Australian Adult Pre-Exercise Screening System (APSS), developed to promote quality control, consistency of practise and mitigate risks across the exercise industry. However, applying the APSS tool to the younger population is inadequate due to the significant differences in physiology, growth and development. This drove the design of the PSS-YP from industry bodies. And your feedback will enable tool refinement before it is released in the exercise industry and contribute to filling a gap in exercise safety, harm minimisation and industry impact. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to UWA School of Design lecturer Craig McCormack for receiving a ‘UWA Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning’ at the 2020 UW...A Awards for Excellence in Teaching last week. Craig is a lecturer and researcher exploring architecture in outer space. He is currently finalising his PhD thesis concerning the possibility of architecture in outer space. My research is concerned with testing the limits of architecture. I believe that this is a very important conversation to be having as people deserve well-designed environments no matter where they are living; even in outer space. Craig has previously received a prestigious Fulbright Western Australian Postgraduate Scholarship to carry out research at the Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture - SICSA and has also studied in the UK (with a background in music and art before moving into architecture). He enjoys being part of UWA's School of Design. Our school community is very strong. It benefits from being a cohesion of art, architecture, and landscape architecture schools all in the one building, which creates a vibrant atmosphere. . . . . #universitywa #uwadesign #uwaarchitecture #uwadesignstaff #uwateachingawards See more

03.01.2022 Between 2018 and 2021 UWA School of Design has been involved in housing research with the CRC for Water Sensitive Cities in a project codenamed ‘IRP4’. This pro...ject has involved UWA School of Design researchers Professor Geoffrey London, Dr Tatjana Todorovic, Daniel Jan Martin along with UWA Adjunct Professor Nigel Bertram and Oscar Sainsbury (Monash University). The project explores housing and urban typologies for good infill housing design, aiming to address the poor impacts of infill across Australian cities. The focus is on designing and planning with open space in mind across scales: from the lot, to the precinct, to the city. The work asks us, as planners, designers and researchers to raise design and performance criteria in planning, to design more nuanced and coordinated precinct planning controls and to cultivate a more connected concept of urban and environmental issues. You can read the article ''Blue-green' housing: designing for sustainable cities’ by Daniel Jan Martin via: https://citiespeoplelove.co/article/bluegreen-infill-housing The range of housing models are included in a ‘Typologies Catalogue’, supported by hydrological and thermal calculations which demonstrate the benefits of good design in quantifiable terms. See the ‘Typologies Catalogue’ here: https://watersensitivecities.org.au//201208_REV4_Typologie The project was led by University of Queensland water scientists Steven Kenway and Marguerite Renouf and architects and urban designers Nigel Bertram (Monash University) and Geoffrey London (The University of Western Australia) with Beata Sochacka, Oscar Sainsbury, Shenbagameenal Surendran, Mojtaba Moravej, Kerry Nice, Tatjana Todorovic, Niloofar Tarakemehzadeh and Daniel Jan Martin. 02.01.2022 Congratulations to UWA School of Design Adjunct Professor Patrick Beale and team from ATC Studio and iredale pedersen hook architects for winning the ‘Commendat...ion for Sustainable Architecture’ at the 2020 National Architecture Awards. From The Australian Institute of Architects: Commendation for Sustainable Architecture - 2020 National Architecture Awards Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre // iredale pedersen hook architects with Advanced Timber Concepts Studio // WA // Traditional Land Owners: Noongar people of the Gnaala Karla Boodja Region // Peter Bennetts Jury citation: In addition to being a beautifully designed sports facility with a generous disposition, the much-loved Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre uses innovative sustainable timber design solutions for low environmental impact and high aesthetic value. One thousand tonnes of local plantation yellow stringybark was harvested, milled and used as cladding and flooring, jarrah was salvaged from the original sports hall, and all other timbers were from sustainable sources. An ingenious structural design using certified engineered timber and offsite prefabrication resulted in the reduced consumption of precious resources. Natural ventilation and fans cool the sports hall, limiting conditioned spaces to the function centre, gymnasium and club rooms. A high level of shading is applied to all glazing, and daylight augments lighting to the sports hall and other spaces. The oversized external timber cladding has been sealed with natural oil; however, it is intended to weather to silver-grey over time. . . . . #universitywa #uwadesign #uwadesignstaff #AustralianInstituteofArchitects #NatAwards20 #australianarchitecture #architecture #architectureawards Australian Institute of Architects (WA Chapter) See more
