20.01.2022 Students in Science, Tech, Engineering, and Maths, we need you! Science Caf is an annual, National Science Week event in Winthrop Hall for year 10 students interested in STEM careers. The event is coordinated by Scitech with the support of UWA. This year, students from 30 WA high schools have been invited to network with over 60 of Western Australias top science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals and UWA undergraduate STEM students over morning... and afternoon tea respectively. In the morning, groups of eight students talk to STEM professionals about careers, and in the afternoon, they talk to you undergraduate STEM students about the journey beyond high school towards a STEM career. Whats in it for you? Free afternoon tea! and a sense of fulfillment from sharing your passion, journey, ambitions, and advice with the next generation of STEM students! There will also be a short speech from a UWA STEM undergraduate student. When and Where? 20.01.2022 Originally from Toowoomba, Queensland, Grace followed her supervisor, Dr Talitha Santini, over to the west coast to complete her PhD in Environmental Science at UWA. Together, along with fellow PhD student Golam Taki, they are working to transform bauxite ore residue a by-product of aluminium production into a soil to host vegetation.

12.01.2022 The official photos are in! Here are our twelve UWA Rising Stars 2020, who we are incredibly proud of after their big night last night. They each had 3 minutes to present their research in every day terminology to inspire and win over the crowd. The top three presenters were awarded with prize money to further their research. They really showed off the exciting and innovative research taking place in our Faculty. 10.01.2022 Looking for participants to aid our research Hormonal changes across different phases of the menstrual cycle may lead to changes in body composition. The most commonly used measurement techniques e.g. DXA may be impacted by these changes. We are trialling a new technique that uses ultrasound to measure the fat layer below the skin. 06.01.2022 A study conducted by a team of sport science researchers at UWA has found that the benefit and physical gain people experience from particular types of exercise routines such as endurance or resistance training is more dependent on environmental factors such as lifestyle and diet rather than genetics. Winthrop Professor Daniel Green from the School of Human Sciences said the study examined how 42 pairs of identical and fraternal twins responded to two different exercise modes during a nine-month period.

04.01.2022 If you are undertaking research in 2021 into identifying, managing and the conservation of World Heritage areas in Western Australia (Ningaloo, Shark Bay, Purnululu, recently nominated Murujuga) then why not apply for the Keiran McNamara World Heritage PhD Top-up scholarship? The scholarship provides $25,000 per annum and comprises a top-up stipend of $10,000 and an allowance of $15,000 for PhD research expenses at one of WAs universities, including UWA.
